Design and Development of Push Type Rice Weeder with Locally Available Materials and Comparison of Its Performance with Japanese Type Weeder

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Power requirement of Japanese type manual weeder was very high as it has two sets of spikes. So the operator got tired quickly. On the other hand BRRI weeder has a single set of spikes, hence it is light and power requirement was comparatively low. The cost of BRRI and Japanese type manual weeder are Tk 95.00 and Tk. 145 respectively.

Methodology:

To accomplish the objectives, tests were conducted in clay loam soil and sandy loam soil. In clay loam soil with a weed density of 500 weeds/sq.m. at saturation it was not possible to operate the Japanese type manual weeder due to clogging of the sticky soil in to the spikes of the seeder. Therefore only BRRI weeder was tested in clay loam soil with four operators (treatments). Treatments were replicated thrice. Following were the treatments: T₁=BRRI weeder with operator O1 T₂ =BRRI weeder with operator O2 T₃ =BRRI weeder with operator O3 T₄ =BRRI weeder with operator O4 For comparison of BRRI weeder with Japanese type manual weeder in sandy loam soil with a weed density of 275 weeds/sq.m. the test were RCB and the treatments were replicated thrice Following were the treatments: T₁ = with BRRI weeder (W) and operator O1 T₂ = with BRRI weeder (W) and operator O2 T₃ = with Japanese type manual weeder (W₂) and operator O1 T₄ = with Japanese type manual weeder W₂ and operator O2

Achievement/Findings:

A low-cost seeder was designed and fabricated at BRRI workshop and its performance was compared with the Japanese type manual weeders. The Japanese type manual weeder introduced in the country has performed satisfactorily as 0.038 ha/hr (0.094 acre/hr). Though the Japanese type manual seeder has greater field capacity yet it comparatively high cost and sophisticated manufacturing techniques necessitated development of an easy to manufacture low cost weeder. With some modification, the BRRI weeder can also be adapted to upland crops. BRRI weeder can be recommended as an effective and cheaper alternative to the Japanese type manual weeder now in use.
