Angoumois grain moth is one of the major pest for stored grain paddy. Sometimes peoples used chemical insecticides to control this pests. But some times the poisonous effects of the  chemicals create  severe health hazards. The experiments was conducted to find out  the efficacy of some eco-friendly  botanicalsThe plant parts were air-dried and then grinded to powder by a grinding mill. The test paddy was kept for 4 weeks in low temperature (50C) after harvest and then in 20C for 24 hrs to ensure disinfestation. Grain weight (gm) and moisture (%) content were measured before mixing with the test botanicals. For each treatment, 5% admixture was prepared adding 2 gm powdered botanical with 40 gm of stored BR3 paddy by shaking in a glass vial. For both the experiments, Angoumois grain moth eggs were collected from the mass reared culture established in the laboratory. Twenty fertilized eggs were placed in each vial containing 5% admixture of treated botanicals. The open end of the vials was covered by nylon net for proper aeration. The eggs were allowed to hatch, grow into larvae and infest the grains. The number of adult(s) emerged from the infested grains of each vial was recorded. The experiments were designed in CRD with 3 replications, considering each vial as a replication. to control the pests in stored paddy. Five percent admixture of Mahogany seed kernel powder effectively controlled (87% mortality) angoumois grain moth in stored paddy. Neem and Mahogany leaf powder (5% admixture) had moderate effect on this stored grain pest (50-60% mortality).

To find out the efficacy of some admixed botanicals against angoumois grain moth in stored paddy

Two experiments were conducted to test the effect of powders of different parts of plants (mahogony, neem, bishkatali, bankalmi and shialmutra) against angoumois grain moth on BR3 paddy in the laboratory. In the first experiment, different parts of mahogony viz., seed kernel, seed kernel with seed coat, fruit cover + inflorescence, bark and leaves were treated as 5% admixture with BR3 paddy in storage . In the second experiment, air-dried leaves of different botanicals viz., neem, mahogony, bishkatali, bankalmi and shialmutra were tested as 5% admixture against the same pest on stored BR3 paddy. The plant parts were air-dried and then grinded to powder by a grinding mill. The test paddy was kept for 4 weeks in low temperature (50C) after harvest and then in 20C for 24 hrs to ensure disinfestation. Among the five mahogony fruit parts, seed kernel powder caused significantly higher mortality (86.79%) of angoumois grain moth. The other materials caused 28.32 to 43.40% mortality of the insect and differences among them were not significant. It seems that seed kernel powder is highly effective against angoumois grain moth of paddy. Neem and mahogony leaf powder were moderately effective against angoumois grain moth causing 59.26 and 51.85% mortalities. The other leaf materials were less effective giving mortalities not exceeding 35.18%.
