Screenings of Elite Lines/varieties Against Major Insect Pests of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To develop an insect resistant variety screening of germplasm and and other materials is essential. With a view to Identifiying of resistant sources against major insect pests and development of resistant varieties germplasm, breeding lines, IRBPHN lines were screened against BPH, WBPH and GLH in the green house of Entomology Division of BRRI with seedling bulk test method. Rice germplasm Dudsar and Malia Bhangor against BPH, SR-26-B and Malia Bhangor against WBPH, Sunadigha, Kasia Binni(2) and Ganjia found moderately resistant to rsistant (score 5) against GLH. Out of 72 IRBPHN eight entries (IR70175-25-1-1-2-1, IR71604-4-1-4-7-10-2-1-3, IR71698-193-3-2-1, IR72890-70-2-3-3, IR72892-77-2-2-2, IR73545-3-1-1-2, IR74271-41-2-1 and IR77495-10-2-6-2) moderately resistant to resistant (score 1-5) against BPH.

Objectives:

Identification of resistant sources against major insect pests and development of resistant varieties

Methodology:

Germplasm, breeding lines, IRBPHN 2007 and exotic materials were screened against BPH, WBPH and GLH during 2006-07. Seeds of these materials were soaked with water for about 24 hours. After soaking the seeds were air dried and seeding each entries in a line on seed boxes. Tthe whole boxes were covered by fine mesh nylon net with iron wire made frame for seedling raising. After 5-6 days of seeding (DAS) each seedling were infested by 6-7 2^nd instar nymph of BPH/WBH/GLH separately. Scoring was taken according to Standard Evaluation System (SES) of 0 to 9 scale .

0= No damage, 1= Very slight damage, 3= First and second leaves yellowing, 5= All leaves yellow, pronounced stunting or both, 7= More than half of the plants dead, remaining plants wilting, severely stunted, 9= All plants dead
