Testing and Evaluation of “dolong” a Manually Operated Rice Huller

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

o Tests with unparboiled paddy showed a higher broken percentage, and there will still be some more breakage during polishing the rice. The moisture content of the paddy was too low which might be a cause of excessive breakage. o Tests with parboiled rice produced higher husking percentage and lower breakage with milling face clearances of 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm. To obtain a better grade of rice, the “dolong” may be operated with 1.5 mm to 2.00 mm clearance for BR11 paddy. As the grain size and shape differ in different varieties of paddy, the best range of clearance of dolong can be found out by the operator for specific paddy variety by trials. The average operating speed of the “dolong” for better results was found to be 50-55 rpm. o Tests with parboiled paddy with double pass through the dolong without separating the husks after first pass produced a higher husking percentage with a higher broken percentage. The capacity of the huller was significantly less for double pass. Therefore, it is advisable to separate rice, husk and paddy after first pass and the unhusked paddy may be passed again through the dolong.

Objectives:

To develop a manually operated rice huller Testing and evaluation of Dolong was completed during last year and the report has been finalized.

Methodology:

A manually operated rice huller "Dolong” was tested in the FMPHT laboratory. BR11 was tested for both parboiled and unparboiled condition. Only husking was done the "Dolong". Polishing was done by 'Dheki'. Data on operating speed, husking percentage, breakage percentage were recorded for both parboiled and unparboiled paddy.

Achievement/Findings:

The capacity of the dolong was 25-30 kg/hr with a husking percentage 70-80%. All the tests showed that the dolong is capable of husking the paddy only and not for polishing which is necessary for consumption. Therefore, the husked rice from dolong have to be polished by dhoki, rice mill or by some other method.
