Performance Evaluation of Mlk Pump

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A manually operated single cylinder double acting pump was procured from the Madaripur Upazilla and tested at different heads (elevation). For one man operation, the maximum efficiency was found to be 70% when the discharge was 100 l/min (22 gal/min) at 4.2 meter head. However, with two operators the maximum pump efficiency was 76% at 3.65 m with a discharge of 152.55 l/min (33.6 gal/min). Operating of this pump by one man beyond 4 meters was found to be fatiguing to the operator. The pump can be profitability used for lifting ground water from tube-wells.

Methodology:

A manually operated pump named MLK pump was procured and tested. MLK pump is a double acting reciprocating pump. For the test, the discharges were taken in three different elevations as 2.65, 3.95 and 5.50 meters, respectively. Data were collected from three minute test runs and then it was converted to flow rate per unit time. At every head the date were recorded for one and two-man operations and the operations were replicated thrice.

The pump characteristics are of similar pattern to those of the centrifugal pump. for one man operation the maximum efficiency was found to be 70 percent when the discharge is 100/1 min. and the corresponding head is 4.2 meter. For two man operation the maximum efficiency is 76 percent when the discharge is 152.55 1/min. and the corresponding head is 3.65 meter. The reason for higher head (4.2m) for one man operation compared to that (3.65m) for two man operation the stroke lengths were not complete at higher head.
