Storage of Paddy Seed in a Metal Bin Placed Under Shed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rice seed quality is very important for higher yield but it is difficult for the farmer to maintain the quality of the seed at farm level. The results showed that germination was above 90% up to mid-may and above 80% up to early August. During the next two months seed viability deteriorated very fast and only 2% of the stored seed germinated in early October. It was probably due to high grain mass temperature and relative humidity inside the bin.

Objectives:

To estimate the seed viability in metal bin

Methodology:

A circular metallic bin (size 8’x5’) was fabricated in 1981 with a holding capacity of 2.2 tones of paddy. Its storage performance test was conducted in 1982 with freshly harvested BR11 rice seed. 2200 kg of BR11 seed was stored on 7th January 1982 and the bin was placed in the open air.

Achievement/Findings:

The average grain mass temperature for both the bins (27.58 and 26.83⁰C) were less than the average ambient temperature (28.88⁰C). The mean relative humidity of the grain mass for both the bins (61.07% and 58.61%) were also less than the ambient (74.61%). Moisture contest was nearly constant during the storage period. For this reason, the seed viability was more than 95% after 8 months. After completion of the test the result will be finalized.
