Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A thermophilic strain was isolated which grew at high temperature and producced considerable amount of xylanase and pectinase activities , where no CMC ase activity was found. The enzyme acted on jute fibre improved the physical properties with little decrease in fibre strength.

Objectives:

Development of pectinolytic and xylanlytic enzymes for the improvement of the quality of jute fibre.

Methodology:

An isolated thermophilic fungus designated as M17 was used for enzyme production in solid state fermentation on wheat bran medium. The bran was moistened with 70% added moiture, sterilized and inoculated with the fungus M 17 . The fermentation was carried out at 55⁰C for 7 days. The crude enzyme was extrated from fermented bran with 5 volumes of 0.1% NaCl solution . The crude enzyme was used for the modification of jute fibres.

Achievement/Findings:

Enzyme extract of the fungus M17 contains a high unit of xylanase and moderate unit of pectinase. Application of enzymes on fibres improves a number of physical parameters indicating the effectivenase of enzymes.
