Effect of Canon 5g (butachlor) for Weed Suppression in Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur with the objective to ?observe its weed control efficiency, impact on plant growth and yield of BR26. Bio efficacy data of Canon 5g @ 25 kg ha^-1 against weed suppression indicated that 83% control of Scirpus maritimus, 81% control of Cyperus difformis, 80% control of Echinochloa crusgalli, and 82% control of Monochoria vaginalis, 65% control of Ludwigia octovalvis were achieved. Canon 5g have no significant effect on plant height but significantly influenced on yield and yield contributing character. The highest tiller m^-2 (303) was observed from weed free plots which is statistically similar with other herbicide treated plots. The lowest tiller m^-2(185) was observed from un weeded plots. Weed free plot gave the highest panicle m^-2 (271) which is statistically similar with other treated plots except un weeded plot. Un weeded plot produced lowest panicle m^-2 (162). Number of filled grain panicle^-1 was statistically similar in all herbicide treatments although weed free plot gave the highest grain panicle^-1. The lowest grain panicle^-1 was observed in un weeded plots. Weed free plot gave the highest grain yield (3.69t/ha) which was statistically similar with other herbicide treated plots. The lowest grain yield was obtained from un weeded plot (1.89 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

To observe its weed control efficiency, impact on plant growth and yield of BR26.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur. The treatment were i) Canon 5g@ 20 Kg ha^-1 ii) Canon 5g @ 25 kg ha^-1 iii) Canon 5g @ 30 kg ha^-1 iv) Machete 5g 25 kg ha^-1 v) weed free and vi) control (un weeded). Machete 5g 25 kg ha^-1 was used to compare the new herbicide. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Forty days old seedlings of BR26 were transplanted on 28th April, 2005 at 20 x 20 cm spacing with 2 seedling hill^-1. Fertilizer was applied following BRRI recommended dose. Herbicides were sprayed at 3 days after transplanting. In weed free treatment, the plots were kept weed free up to 40 DAT. Weed control efficiency was calculated using weed dry matter weight data. Other operations were done as when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

From the study it is concluded that Canon 5g @ 25 kg ha^-1 controlled some weeds effectively and produced optimum grain yield in T.Aus season.
