The study was conducted in three stress prone environment namely submergence, drought and saline areas of Bangladesh with the objectives of carryout preference analysis and relevant socio-economic assessment of the rice producing farmers in the PVS villages and impact assessment and targeting- Identify technology characteristics, components, and combinations that best meet farmers’ livelihood needs in target rainfed environments. Farmers of Submergence areas preferred the lines/varieties such as IR85260-66-654-Gaz 2, IR85260-66-217-Gaz 2 and BR11 Sub1 mainly due to long plant height, lower pests and disease infestation, higher number of grains per panicle, comparatively higher yield expected by the farmers and tolerant to submergence. In drought prone area, the preferred varieties are IR74371-70-1-1 and IR74371-54-1-1. The reasons for preferring were log plant height, can escape drought, and lower insect/pests and disease infestation. In saline areas, farmers preferred BRRI dhan40, IR 77092-B-2R-B-10, IR77092-B-2R-B-22, IR78769-3R-B-51 and IR78767-3R-B-6 mainly due to salt tolerant, comparatively lower insect/pests and disease infestation and tolerant to salinity. Preference of farmers (Male and Female) and scientist for selecting varieties is positively correlated.

  1. Carryout preference analysis and relevant socio-economic assessment of the rice producing farmers in the PVS villages.

Preference analysis on important lines of T.Aman rice trail was conducted at submergence, drought and salinity prone areas during November 2009. Major locations of submergence prone areas were Comilla, Habigonj, Feni, Sirajgonj and Kurigram. On the other hand preference analysis was conducted at three drought prone locations of Rajshahi namely Godagari, Nachole, and Tanore and five salinity locations namely Kalapara, Batiaghata, Shamnagar, Sonagazi and Noakhali. The participants gathered at one place in each location near the experimental fields. The program started with the brief introduction of the BMGF project and the objective of conducting the preference analysis. Later, farmers were explained how to conduct this activity. All the participants moved to the mother trial location and observed the physical traits of each and every variety/line included in the trial. Each line/entry had a stick and bag with serial number as their variety tag. Each participant was given 4 pieces of ballots, 2 checks and 2 crosses, and voted for their two most preferred and two least preferred lines/entries. However, in saline areas, one least preferred vote was taken from each farmer. Ballots were color coded to classify male farmers, female farmers and scientists/researchers. Female farmers voted first, followed by male farmers and the scientists/researchers, the last. Votes were tallied and the preference scores were computed in front of all the participants by using the formula *PS = {No. of (ß) – No. of (þ)}/(Total no. of +ve and –ve votes) .The two most preferred and two least preferred varieties/lines were announced. Farmers were asked for reasons in choosing the top voted lines/varieties. Panicles of the selected lines/varieties were shown to farmers to recall the morpho-agronomical characteristics of those varieties/lines. This was done instead of going back to the field because of limited time since the farmers were busy in harvesting their own crops. Later on, correlation analysis was performed to test if there are significant correlations between the preference scores of male and female farmers as well as the preference scores of farmers and breeders and farmers and yield.
