An attempt was made by the study to investigate the attitude of the farmers regarding BARI technology and economic benefits of BARI crops in different locations under technology village. Study revealed that the area of BARI crops increased with the increase use of improved BARI variety of different crops in the technology village. All the selected BARI crops, such as potato, wheat, lentil, mungbean and mustard cultivation found profitable but yield of those crops were lower compared to potential yield and were higher compared to national average yield. Farmers’ perception was mostly positive on the use of BARI variety while seeds are not available in the local market mentioned by them as major constraint for adoption of BARI crops.

i. To measures the economic benefits of BARI technology

ii. To find out the attitude of the farmers on BARI technology

iii. To identify the constraints of BARI technology for the adoption by the farmers in technology village.

The present study was conducted in four (4) locations such as Lebutala village under Sadar Upazila of Jessore district, Sharagopalpur village under Ishurdi upazila of Pabna district, Radha krishnapur village under sadar upazila of Rangpur district and Alampur village under Hathazari upazila of Chittagong district. A total of 63 farmers; 16 from Rangpur, 15 from Pabna, 19 from Jessore and 13 from Chittagong were selected as sample for the study. A set of pre-designed questionnaire were used for the collection of desired data to achieve the objectives of the study. Then, collected data were analysed using average, percentage and ratios etc and are presented in tabular form. Analysis of production costs for different crops was done based on variable and fixed cost. Variable cost is a cost that can be varied with amount of output or production. Present study considered the cost of hired human labour, manures and fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides etc. as variable cost and calculated by the price paid by the farmers in different locations. On the other hand, fixed costs are costs which do not change in total with change in output. Opportunity cost of family labour, land and interest on operating capital were considered as fixed cost and calculated by the prevailing market price of respective item. The term ‘return’ simply refers to the receipts obtained from the sale of certain quantities of products at various prices. Therefore, present study calculated the quantity of main produce multiplied by price received from respective crops by the farmers as gross return. The investigation and analysis of data covered the period of 2006-2007.

Most of the sample farmers used Cardinal and Diamant variety for the cultivation of potato in all the selected study area. However, farmers in Jessore received higher net return in both over variable cost (Tk. 149118/ha) and total cost (Tk. 126891/ha) as well as benefit cost ratio in both over variable cost (3.06) and over total cost (2.34) compared to other location. In technology village, sample farmers used the variety Shatabdi, Bijoy and Kanchan for the cultivation of wheat. As a result net return in both over variable cost (Tk 34011/ha) and total cost (Tk. 19077/ha) as well as benefit cost ratio over variable cost (3.24) and over total cost (1.63) were higher in Rangpur compared to Pabna. In technology village, sample farmers used the variety BARI-Masur-3 for the cultivation of lentil in both the locations. As a result, net return in both over variable cost (Tk. 44472/ha) and over total cost (Tk. 34739/ha) as well as benefit cost ratio over variable cost (5.14) and over total cost (2.70) were higher in Pabna compared to Jessore . In the technology village, sample farmers in both the locations used BARI-6 variety for the cultivation of mungbean. Moreover, sample farmers in Jessore received slightly higher benefit cost ratio in both over variable cost (3.17) and over total cost. For the cultivation of mustard, sample farmers used the variety BARI-12, 9 and 11. In the end, it can be said that the cropped area and use of BARI variety has increased to some extend with the establishment of technology village. Cultivation of selected crops such as potato, wheat, lentil, mungbean and mustard found economically profitable. The variety developed by BARI for different crops has created good impression to the farmers while seeds of those varieties are not available in the local market.
