Production performance of different strains of tilapia with shrimp in eight brackishwater ponds of 0.20 ha each was studied. The ponds were stocked with only shrimp @ 20000/ha in treatment 1 (T1), shrimp @ 20000/ha and tilapia (GenoMar Supreme) monosex @ 10000/ha in T2, shrimp @ 20000/ha and tilapia (FISHGENBangla) monosex @ 10000/ha in T3, and shrimp @ 20000/ha and tilapia (BFRI GIFT) mixed sex @ 10000/ha in T4 each with a replication. The commercial pellet feed (Saudi-Bangla feed) for shrimp and locally formulated feed (approx. 35% protein content) for tilapia were supplied twice daily. After 120 days of culture, growth of shrimp was 23.41 to 26.67g in ponds stocked with tilapia and 27.41g in ponds with shrimps only. The specific growth rate (SGR) of shrimp was 7.04-7.17%, while the SGR of tilapia strains was 4.27-6.03%. The estimated FCR value was 1.75, 1.73, 1.92 and 2.30 in treatments T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively. The differences in growth, survival and production of shrimp and tilapia among different treatments were insignificant. The production of tilapia strain of GenoMar Supreme was highest of 1,777.10 kg/ha, followed by 1,668.95 kg/ha of FISHGENBangla and 1,622.92 kg/ha of BFRI GIFT.

To evaluate impact of genetically improved tilapia monosex strains on the growth and production pf Panaeus monodon; and to increase the unit production of shrimp farms.

A 40m2 nursery area encircled with nylon net fastened with bamboo fence was set up in each pond. The ponds were treated with lime @ 400 kg/ha followed by application of mustard oil cake (MOC) @ 250 kg/ha and TSP and urea (2:1) @ 35 kg/ha. Tidal brackishwater from nearby the Sibsha river was entered into the ponds. After one week, the hatchery produced PCR tested shrimp (Penaeus monodon) post-larvae (PL) were stocked in the nursery enclosure in March. After two weeks of nursing, juveniles of shrimp were allowed to spread throughout the culture pond by opening the nursery enclosure. Fry (ABW, 2.50 g) of different strains of tilapia were stocked directly to the respective grow out ponds after 10 days of shrimp stocking in the nursery. In the nursery, post larvae of shrimp were fed with commercial (Saudi-Bangla) nursery feed @ 100%, 80% and 60% of the estimated shrimp biomass at six hour interval daily in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd week, respectively. After three weeks, juveniles of shrimp were allowed to spread throughout the culture pond by lifting the net of nursery enclosures and feed was supplied @ 30%, 20% and 0% of the estimated shrimp biomass at six hours interval daily for the 4th, 5th and 6th week respectively and @ 4~3% of the estimated shrimp biomass twice (Dawn and dusk) daily for the rest of the culture period. Fish was fed with locally formulated feed (approx. 35% protein content, consisting of a mixture of fishmeal-29%, MOC-15%, rice bran-35%, soybean meal-21%) twice daily @ 5~3% of fish standing biomass. To improve water quality and productivity of the ponds, lime (dolomite @ 100 kg/ha) and fertilizer (urea @ 1.2 ppm and TSP @ 1.5 ppm) were applied to the ponds at monthly interval throughout the culture period.

The production performance and cost-benefit analysis indicates that concurrent culture of shrimp (P. monodon) either with monosex of tilapia or GIFT will be more viable than monoculture of shrimp in extensive system. Considering both economics and availability of seed, GIFT will be the best among three tested strains of tilapia for culture with shrimp in brackishwater ghers. Considering both production performance and return, and ecological conditions of ponds with different stocking densities of shrimp, it can be emphasized that concurrent culture of shrimp (P. monodon) and GIFT with more than 2/m2 shrimp will not be feasible at the present level of management. Of course, further research can be conducted with the provision of aeration in the ponds.
