Determination of the Fibre Fineness of Different Jute Fibres (tossa and White) Growing Areas of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The average diameter of different grades of fiber was measured by Air Flow method and Gravimetric method. It is observed from the results that the diameter of Tossa jute fibre is higher than that of White jute fiber measured by Air Flow method and Gravimetric method. In the investigation the reeds were combed to facilitate the picking of fibers. This combing operation opened the meshy structure of the reeds in such a way that split up the coarser fibres more that it did the fine fibers. The weight effect was that due to combing operation the coarse fiber, spilt up into comparatively fine fibers or rather into filaments whose linear density was comparable to those of the fine fibers.

Objectives:

To determine fiber fineness and comparative study among test methods.

Methodology:

The samples were collected from experimental mills and different jute growing areas of Bangladesh. Method of measurement: Air Flow method - In this method fineness was obtained of fibre diameter expressed in micron. The apparatus used was developed by BJTRA. In this apparatus air was sucked in through a cylindrical bundle of fibres 7.62 cm (3″) long and having 3.3 cm diameter. The resistance to air flow was indicated in a flow meter which was calibrated in terms of fibre diameter in micron. In this standard BJTRA method of 15.24 cm (6″) long and approx 3.3 cm internal diameter cylindrical cell open at both ends was taken. For determination of fibre Fineness by Gravimetric method: Single filaments were taken from more or less middle portion of the reeds for each group of jute that were tested. All the single filaments were cut to 10-cm. in lengths before taking the weight by an electronic balance of capacity 0.01 mg to 42 mg. In this case linear density was determined; it was the weight of one kilometers long filament in grams, the unit being in Tex.

Achievement/Findings:

It is observed from the results the diameters of Tossa jute fibre is higher than that of white jute fibre both measured by the air flow method and Gravimetric method. Normally the value of upper grade would show less value than the lower grade. The diameter of the fibres therefore depends mainly upon the number of filaments stacking together interlinked in a meshy structure. Greater the number of filaments coarser is the fibre. In the investigation the reeds were combed to facilitate the picking of fibers. This combing operation opened the meshy structure of the reeds in such a way that split up the coarser fibres more that it did the fine fibres. The weight effect was that due to combing operation the coarse fiber, spilt up into comparatively fine fibers or rather into filaments whose linear density was comparable to those of the fine fibers.
