Economic Analysis of Some Selected Crops Grown in Saline Soils Under Different Treatment at Charmajid, Noakhali

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance of tomato, watermelon and chilli under different planting and irrigation techniques in the saline soils of Charmajid, Noakhali during the rabi season of 2006-2007. Simultaneously, promising treatments were demonstrated at farmers field for the cultivation of tomato and water melon in same location under saline soils. Besides, a survey was conducted adjacent to the project site during the same period to estimate the economic return from the cultivation of tomato, watermelon and chilli. Considering yield, gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio, tomato and watermelon performed better in experiment through the treatments of drip irrigation in raised bed with mulch. In similar way, chilli performed better in experiment through the treatments of irrigation by manual pump in raised bed with mulch and irrigation by can in raised bed with mulch. According to the farmers opinion that late planting of Aman rice due to poor drainage system which resulted delayed planting of rabi crops is a major problem.

Objectives:

i) To evaluate the economic performance of some selected crops grown under different treatments in experiment and the promising treatment in demonstration field and

ii) To find out the constraints of the promising treatment for greater adoption by the farmers.

Methodology:

A farmer was selected from Charmajid under the district of Noakhali for establish an experiment in his field during the rabi season of 2006-2007. In experiment, three crops such as tomato (Variety: BARI tomato-3) Watermelon (Variety: Glory) and chilli (Variety: Local) were grown under different irrigation and planting techniques. In addition, five farmers were selected with some specific criteria for demonstration of proved potential technology in their field. From the last three years experiment, the potential technologies were found that drip irrigation in raised bed with mulch and drip irrigation in raised bed without mulch as they received higher yield as well as and higher economic return for the production of tomato and water melon. Therefore, from an experiment and from the two demonstration field, necessary data were collected for economic analysis. Besides, a survey was conducted on same crops of farmers field adjacent to the project site to compare the results with the results obtained from an experiment and demonstration fields. In case of both experiment and demonstration fields, costs of all inputs required for different crop production were calculated by the prevailing market price during crop period and treated as cash-costs. But in case of farmers’ field, only cost of purchased inputs was considered as cash-cost. Interest on operating capital was calculated based on cash-cost for the period of two month at the rate of 7% per year. Since, land renting system is not practiced in the study area, opportunity cost of land were calculated based on crop sharing between land owner and lease holder during the cultivation of Aman rice. Collected data were analysed for the calculation of simple costs, return as well as partial budgeting and marginal rate of return and presented in tabular form.

Considering yield, gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio, tomato and watermelon performed better in experiment through the treatments of drip irrigation in raised bed with mulch. In similar way, chilli performed better in experiment through the treatments of irrigation by manual pump in raised bed with mulch and irrigation by can in raised bed with mulch. Considering marginal rate of return, the treatments; irrigation by manual pump in raised bed with mulch performed better for the cultivation of all the selected crops in experiment. In demonstration, all the treatments received reasonable economic return. Although the treatment; drip irrigation in raised bed with mulch performed better compared to others. In adjacent to the project site, farmers also received a good economic return from the cultivation of tomato, watermelon and chilli with minimum investment as there is in fact salinity is not a problem for crop production in their field. According to the farmers opinion that late planting of Aman rice due to poor drainage system which resulted delayed planting of rabi crops is a major problem. Another major problem is that a good variety of seeds or seedlings of tomato as demonstrated by us are not available in the local market. It was mentioned by the farmers that although cultivation of selected crops through drip irrigation in raised bed with mulch performed better but irrigation by manual pump in raised bed with mulch is suitable for adoption as it is less costly.
