Relationship Between Infestation Intensity and Crop Loss by Helopeltis in Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was done to asses the relationship between crop loss and infestation due to attack by Helopeltis. The percentage of infestation and corresponding economic yield loss were assessed by Lubischev's analytical method. It was observed that overall infestation in the treated and untreated plots respectively were 1.28% and 9.14% while the overall crop loss were correspondingly shown to be 0.43% and 2.34%. The value of treated plots were r = 0.75 and untreated plots were r = 0.63. There was a positive co-relation between the infestation and crop loss incurred by this pest. It also revealed that no significant economic loss was incurred when the level of infestation remains below 10%.

Objectives:

To determine the gradation of infestation
To asses the quantum of crop loss due to Helopeltis infestation

Methodology:

A paired treatment trial was conducted. There were 13 blocks, each 1/25th acre having a pair of treated and untreated plots, each having an area of 6.70m x 12.08m guarded by one row of bushes. Thiodan 35EC @ 1.5lit/ha was used as a BTRI approved standard pesticide. The treated plots received 3 rounds of spray during cropping season. Each experimental plot was the clonal tea of same age-group was surveyed weekly throughout the cropping season. There are thirty bushes in each plot. A total of 28 rounds of plucking were harvested during cropping season at scheduled interval. Observations on the rate of infestation and yield potential were made from the 5 randomly selected bushes in the centre of each treated and untreated plot throughout the cropping season. The percentage of infestation and corresponding economic yield loss were assessed by Lubischev's analytical method.
