Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Guide, Pabna Sadar

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pabna Sadar Upazila lies in the physiographic unit of Active Ganges Floodplain (AEZ 10) and Old Ganges Floodplain (AEZ 11). The upazila comprises of 11 unions having a population of 476,932 (2001). Four land types namely highland, medium highland, medium lowland, and low land were identified. The topsoil pH ranges from slightly acidic to extremely alkaline. The textural classes were sand, sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay. Six soil groups were identified. Fourteen major cropping patterns were found in the upazila. Total 208 soil samples were collected and analyzed. It was found that the soils of Active and Old Ganges Floodplain area are deficient in N, P K, S, Zn and B. Most of the soils are deficient in organic matter. Gopalpur or Ishwardi soils in medium highlands could be utilized for the production of Mustard (early)-Boro-T. aman cropping pattern and thus production of crops might be increased. Isamati river and Vadoi Khal could be excavated to increase water holding and reserving capacity of them, and thus to decrease the intensity of seasonal flood damage as well as increase surface water supply for irrigation. Pabna Sadar upazila was first surveyed in 1990 and updated in 2013.

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and landform map was prepared using 1:50,000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soil samples were collected. The sampling frequency were 1 (one) sample per 200 ha. During survey, crops, cropping pattern, soil management data were collected by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops was made. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
