The study was conducted in two Upazilas of Bogra district to investigate the performance and to assess the impact of newly developed technologies, trico-compost on different vegetables production at farm level. The farmers who used trico-compost for vegetables cultivation received 5%, 21%, 14% and 18 % higher yield for yard long bean, okra, cucumber and eggplant respectively than that of the non user trico-compost farmers. Most of the coefficients of input were found less significant. Return to scale more than one also indicated that more profit can be earned by increasing of those inputs. It is also noted that the total variable cost incurred by the trico-compost users saved. As a result higher gross margin and benefit cost ratio were obtained by the trico-compost users. For Useing trico-compost gross margin was increased from 16 to 46% for selected vegetables over the control farmers. The farmers were very much impressed to see the vigor growth of the plants and their fruit quality, attractive colour, size and prolonged harvesting period. Farmers were also highly satisfied for its market demand and price of the product. Some of major constraints for using trico-compost were also identified.

  Dissemination

i. To find the profitability and benefits of trico-compost technologies for different vegetables production over farmers practices

ii. To determine the impact of trico-compost technologies in terms of yield, return and income over the farmers practice

iii. To assess the knowledge and attitudes of the farmers using the technologies

iv. To know the constraints of the trico-compost technologies.

Two villages from each upazilla were selected based on the technology given to the farmers for vegetables cultivation. In selecting the area, necessary help was taken from the concerned scientists of BARI and SKSS personnel, a partner NGOs of MCC of the respective upazila. The final sample consist of 60 farmers who adopted trico-compost technologies for different vegetables cultivation, consisting 14 farmers for yard long bean, 15 for okra, 13 for cucumber and 18 for eggplant farmers. On the other hand, 60 farmers were selected randomly from nearby village as non-trico-compost users taking equal in number from each type of vegetables to compare the performance among the two groups. Data were collected by survey method with the help of pre-designed interview schedules from July to August, 2009. Data were taken on crop establishment, yields, farmers’ perception on technology, input-output costs, price and other necessary information related to trico-compost technologies. The collected data were analyzed by tabular and statistical model. Cobb-Douglas type revenue function was used to estimate the parameters.

Farmers believed that if they can apply trico-compost on regular basis than it wouldl create remarkable impact on vegetable cultivation. The average yield of yard long bean, okra, cucumber and eggplant for trico-compost users were 19.21, 11.98, 25.88 and 26.14 ton per hectare respectively while for non trico-compost users it was 18.25, 9.92, 22.26 and 22.20 ton per hectare respectively.. Gross return was the highest Tk 275772/ha in cucumber demonstrated trials mainly due to higher yield, higher price and lower cost of production and the lowest Tk/ha 83557 in okras demonstrated trials mainly due to lower yield among the trico-compost users. Similarly, the average gross margin per hectare for yard long bean, okra, cucumber and eggplant were Tk 96467, Tk 36094, Tk 191996 and Tk 93198 per hectare for trico-compost farmers again for non-trico-compost users it was Tk 82924, Tk 24744, Tk 154399 and Tk 69661 respectively for the same vegetables. The farmers of cucumber demonstrated trials received the highest benefit cost ratio (3.30) and ranked first than that of other farmers due to lower cost of production. The second highest benefit was obtained for yard long bean vegetable which attained a benefit cost ratio over total variable cost basis was 3.20. The gross margin for yard long bean, okra, cucumber and eggplant were 16%, 46%, 24% and 34% respectively, higher over the non-user farmers. Farmers (46%) interested to allocate more area for vegetable cultivation if trico-compost is available in proper time. Some of the farmers (52%) opined that they will prepare trico-compost at their homestead for production of vegetables in future. Most of the coefficients of input were found less significant. Scarcity of land area in homestead, knowledge gap about preparation of trico-compost, time consuming, lack of training were the major problems for them.
