Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Guide, Ranishonkail

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ranishonkail upazila is situated in the south western part of Thakurgaon district and covers an area of 28,760 ha. The upazila comprises of 8 unions having a population of 1,96,134 (2001). It lies in the physiographic unit of Himalayan Piedmont Alluvial Plain and Tista Alluvial Plain. Three land types namely highland , medium highland and medium low land were identified. The textural classes of soil found were sandy loam, loam and clay loam. Eleven soil groups were identified. Nine major cropping patterns were found in the upazila. Total 141 soil samples were collected and analyzed and found that the soils of the upazila are deficient in N, K, Zn and B. Dharmagarh, Kashipur, Nekmorodh, Bachor and Nanduar union of this upazila were suitable for vegetable cultivation or year round crop i.e. sugarcane/ banana/ zinger/ tuermeric. Ranishonkail upazila was first surveyed in 1985 and updated in 2008.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and land form map was prepared using 1:50000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soils were collected. The sampling frequency was 1 (one) sample per 200 ha. During survey, crops, cropping pattern, soil management data were collected by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops was made. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

Ranishonkail upazila lies under the AEZ no. 1 (Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain) and AEZ no. 3(Tista Flood Plain). In this upazila major land type recognized was highland comprising 51.1% of total area followed by medium highland comprising 34.4% of the total area. Major textural class also identified was loam covering 75.4% of total area followed by clay loam (7.4%) and sandy loam (5.6%). Eleven soil groups were identified namely Ranishonkail, Pirgacha, Palasbari, Jamun, Baliadangi, Gangachara, Atwari, Sreerampur, Kaunia, Loskara and Menanagar. In highland Palasbari covers major area while in medium highland Gangachara covers major area. For different land type and soil group, the crop suitability was determined for both irrigated and non-irrigated condition and a list of suitable crops for this area is in the guide. Nine major cropping pattern were found in the area of which Mustard/potato/wheat/maize/robi vegetables- Fallow- Transplanted Aman covered major area (35.9%) followed by Boro (HYV)-Fallow- TA(HYV) (20.8%). Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops is given in the guide. The guide can be used for determining flood and drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion affected area. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
