The study was conducted for the economic assessment of tuberose cultivation in Bangladesh. Primary data were collected from 100 randomly selected farmers from Jessore and Chuadanga districts. The results indicated that the costs of tuberose cultivation were Tk 201137 and Tk 129659 per hectare on full cost and variable cost basis, respectively. The yield of tuberose was 454425 sticks per hectare. The gross margin was Tk 551978 and Tk 561582 per hectare on variable cost and cash cost basis respectively. The net return from tuberose cultivation was Tk 4,80,500 per hectare. The benefit cost ratios were 5.25 and 3.39 over variable cost and total cost basis, respectively. The total cost of production of tuberose was 26%, 12%, and 28% higher than its competitive crops like banana, papaya, and Jute+ T.Aman respectively. The net return of tuberose cultivation was 65% higher than banana 71% higher than papaya, and 91% higher than jute +T.aman cultivation. Production function revealed that human labour, seedling and irrigation had positive effect on tuberose cultivation. Lack of scientific knowledge, high yielding varieties, and efficient transport facility were major problems found in tuberose cultivation.

  Constraints, Efficiency

i. To identify the existing agronomic practices of tuberose cultivation;

ii. To estimate the profitability of tuberose cultivation;

iii. To measure the relative profitability of tuberose with major competing crops;

iv. To examine the resource use efficiency of tuberose production and

v. To find out the socio-economic constraints to its higher production.

The present study was conducted in Jhikorgacha Upazila under Jessore district and Sadar Upazila under Chuadanga district during 2009-2010. A complete list of tuberose growers were collected from the study areas, and finally a total of 100 tuberose farmers taking 50 farmers from each area were randomly selected for the study. In order to compare the benefit of tuberose cultivation with other competing crops, banana, papaya, and Jute+ T. Aman were selected. The competitive crops were selected on the basis of same soil and land type of tuberose cultivation in the study areas. Total 100 farmers were selected from each location for each competitive crop. Second year tuberose gardens were selected for primary data collection through questionnaire survey with the help of pre-tested interview schedule. The collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. The tabular method of analysis using different statistical tools was used in presenting the results of the study. Land use cost was calculated on the basis of per year lease value of land. The profitability of tuberose production was estimated using gross margin, net return and benefit cost analysis. Cobb-Douglas production function was used to estimate the contribution of factors to tuberose production.

The average costs of tuberose cultivation were Tk 201137 and Tk 129659 per hectare on total cost and variable cost basis, respectively. The major share of total cost was for human labour (30%), land use (23%), fertilizer (17%), and irrigation (12%). The average yield of tuberose was 4,54,425 sticks per hectare. The gross return of tuberose cultivation was estimated at Tk 6,81,637 per hectare. The gross margin of tuberose cultivation was Tk 5,51,978 per hectare. The net return of tuberose cultivation was Tk 4,80,500 per hectare. The benefit cost ratios were 5.25 and 3.39 over total cost and variable cost basis, respectively. The cost of production of tuberose was 26%, 12%, and 28% higher than its competitive crops like banana, papaya, and jute+T.Aman, respectively. On the other hand, the net returns from tuberose cultivation were 65%, 71%, and 91% higher than banana, papaya, and jute + T.aman respectively. Production function revealed that human labour, seedling and irrigation had positive effect on tuberose cultivation. Lack of scientific knowledge, high yielding varieties, and efficient transport facility were major problems found in tuberose cultivation.
