Comparative Study of Major Rabi Crops in Two Selected Coastal Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in two coastal districts namely Noakhali and Patuakhali of Bangladesh during the period of 2009-2010 to determine the costs, returns and relative profitability of mungbean, groundnut and water melon cultivation. A total of 180 farmers taking 90 farmers from each location were interviewed to achieve the objectives of the study. The study revealed that the watermelon cultivation is required more uses of inputs than that of groundnut and mungbean. Farmers gained higher profit from watermelon compared to mungbean and groundnut. Benefit cost ratio was higher for watermelon than that of mungbean and groundnut. Untimely rainfall, lack of irrigation facilities and high price of quality seed were identified as a major problem of mungbean, groundnut and watermelon cultivation in the study areas.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Based on the area and production information of rabi crop cultivation from BBS (2007). The present study was conducted in three major rabi crops (Mungbean, Groundnut and Water melon) growing coastal areas namely Patuakhali and Noakhali districts of Bangladesh. One upazila from each district and two villages from each upazila were selected purposively to collect primary data and information from the sample farmers. The study areas were chosen through consultation with Agricultures Extension Officer and local scientist of OFRD of BARI. A total of 180 number of sample farmers taking 90 farmers from each district was selected randomly for interview. The collected data were then analyzed by suing descriptive statistics.

Achievement/Findings:

Total cost of mungbean was found to be Tk. 23,980 per hectare. Among the cost incurred for human labour followed by rental value and land preparation cost. Total cost for groundnut cultivation was found to be Tk. 45,896 of which 63% was variable cost. For watermelon cultivation highest cost was incurred for human labour (35%) followed by fertilizer cost (24%). Total cost of watermelon cultivation was found to Tk. 76,558 per hectare of which 77 percent was variable cost. Among the three major rabi crops, per hectare cost of human labour, fertilizer, seeds, insecticides and irrigation was higher in watermelon compared to groundnut and mungbean cultivation. On an average, per hectare total variable cost was also found higher for watermelon (Tk. 59,258/ha) followed by groundnut (Tk. 28,896/ha) and mungbean (Tk. 11,405/ha) cultivation. Total cost was also found higher for watermelon compared to groundnut and mungbean. Average gross return was higher for watermelon (Tk. 1,50,309/ha) followed by groundnut (Tk. 49,760/ha) and mungbean (Tk. 27,300). Net return was found higher for watermelon (Tk. 73,751) followed by groundnut (Tk. 3,863/ha) and mungbean (Tk. 3,318/ha). Average return to each taka spent of production is important criterion for measuring profitability in growing a crop. The benefit cost ratio was found higher for watermelon (1.96) followed by Mungbean (1.14) and groundnut (1.08) on total cost basis. Untimely rainfall, lack of irrigation facilities and high price of quality seed were mentioned as a major problem of mungbean, groundnut and watermelon cultivation in the study areas.
