The study showed that the 85, 53 and 43% of post block farmers adopted improved mustard varieties in Pabna, Tangail and Jamalpur respectively. The 15, 20 and 35% farmers of non-block adopted HYV mustard variety in Tangail, Jamalpur and Pabna respectively. The cost of production was higher for Block farmers compared to Post block and Non block farmers. The average yield was higher in Block (1.55 t/ha) and Post block (1.39 t/ha) compared to non-block (0.99 t/ha) who cultivate local variety of mustard. The total return and gross margin was also found to be higher in Block and Post-block farmers. Net return was found to be Tk. 18799/ha and Tk.16556/ha in Block and Post block respectively, whereas it was Tk 2212/ha in Non block. About 74% farmers of Block and Post block showed interest to continuing HYV BARI mustard cultivation in the next year. Non availability of HYV seed, lack of knowledge about inclusion of mustard with T. aman and Boro cropping pattern, risk of yield, higher cost HYV mustard cultivation, lack of credit facilities etc.

  Mustard

i. To find out the level of adoption of BARI mustard cultivation at farm level and analyze the factors influencing its adoption.

ii. To assess the impact of block demonstration at farm level.

iii. To explore constraints to higher adoption of BARI mustard cultivation and suggest policy guidelines for higher adoption of this technology.

Based on area and production, the present study was conducted in three mustard growing districts namely Pabna, Tangail, and Jamalpur of Bangladesh. In each district two upazila and from each upazilas one or two village(s) was selected to collect primary data and information from those farmers who cultivated BARI mustard under Block demonstration plot. On the other hand, data on mustard cultivation were also collected from the control farmers (non block farmer). The study areas were chosen in consultation with the scientists of Oilseed Research Centre and local scientists involved in the OFRD of BARI. Thus a total of 138 sample farmers were selected for interview. The collected data were analyzed by tabular and suitable statistical methods. The probit model was used to identify the factors responsible for adoption of BARI mustard variety and their extant of probability of adoption.

A total of 85, 53 and 43 percent of post block farmers adopted improved mustard varieties in Pabna, Tangail and Jamalpur respectively. In case of Pabna, highest 40% of the farmers adopted BARI Sarisha-11 followed by BARI Sarisha- 15 (35%). Thirty five and 29% of the farmers adopted BARI Sarisha-9 and BARI Sarisha -8 in Tangail and Jamalpur district respectively. In the case of non-block farmers, 15 and 20 percent farmer adopted HYV mustard variety in Tangail and Jamalpur whereas 35% of the farmers in Pabna adopted HYV mustard variety and rest of the farmers cultivate local variety of mustard. Using probit model, it was observed that age of the farmers significantly influenced the adoption of HYV mustard varieties. The coefficient of awareness of seed collection was found to be negative and significant. Information variables played an important role in the adoption of HYV mustard cultivation at farm level. Adoption was significantly influenced by block demonstration, neighboring farmers and extension contact. The total cost of production for block-farmers was found to be Tk. 42980 of which 60% were variable cost and 40% were fixed cost. The costs of production for post-block and non-block farmers were found to be Tk 38394 and Tk 32112 respectively. Net return was found to be Tk. 18799/ha and Tk16556/ha for block and post-block farmers respectively whereas it was Tk 2212/ha for non-block farmers. The rate of return per one taka investment on total cost basis was also found higher for block (1.44), post-block (1.43) farmers compared non block farmer (1.08). Non availability of HYV seed, lack of knowledge about inclusion of mustard with T. aman and Boro cropping pattern, risk of yield, higher cost HYV mustard cultivation, lack of credit facilities etc. were the major constraints faced by the farmer.
