Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute is hygroscopic in nature. Moisture regain of jute changes with the change of weather in different months of a year. Jute buyer and user like to know the grade wise moisture regain of the jute at different months. To evolve a systematic data of the moisture regain of different varieties jute throughout the year was accomplished. Different varieties of jute from different region were collected and their moisture regain were collected at the place of purchase and finally analyzed that data to make a conclusion. The moisture regain of different grades of jute, viz BWA,BWB, BWC, BTD, BTE, BTsp1, BTB etc were studied. In both tossa and white jute, all the higher grades showed lower moisture contents than the corresponding lower grades.

Objectives:

To standardize the moisture regain of jute of different grades in different month in Bangladesh

Methodology:

Ten grades of jute namely, BWA, BWB, BWC, BWD, BWE, BTA, BTB, BTC, BTD and BTE were collected from pacca bales. The samples were exposed to open air for 48 hours in BJRI shed. The moisture regain of the exposed jute were determined by moisture regain tester as per standard method and the moisture content were the calculated from those results. Another six samples were collected form different jute growing areas of Rangpur and Dinajpur. The temperature and relative humidity of those places were measured when the sample were collected and packet in the polythene. The moisture regain of those samples were determined by Rapid Regain tester as per standard methods and moisture content were calculated from the data.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that, higher relative humidity percentage the higher the moisture content percentage. In case of white jute, the higher the grade higher the percentage of moisture content. In addition it was found that, in case of Tossa jute fiber the moisture content of lower grades of jute except BTD were higher than those of the higher grades.
