Survey on Postharvest Practices and Losses of Mango in Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted to know existing postharvest practices and losses of mango during May to June 2010. Three mango growing areas viz. Chapai Nawabgonj, Rajshahi and Satkhira, and two urban areas namely, Dhaka and Gazipur were selected for this study. Some indigenous postharvest practices such as pre-cooling by keeping the harvested fruits under the tree shade or tin shade with fan were observed in all the growing areas mostly by the growers and beparies. Mainly plastic crates and bamboo baskets lining with straw were used pakeging the fruit. The postharvest losses were found 10.0, 4.7, 2.63, 6.71, 6.89 and 3.73% at harvest, transport, piker, wholesaler, retailer and consumer levels, respectively. Considering the channels involved in mango marketing, the growers, wholesaler and retailers had the highest percent of losses followed by the consumers (3.73%). Thus, the total postharvest loss of mango was estimated as high as 34.67%.

Objectives:

To know the existing postharvest practices and losses of mango fruits at different segment of marketing channels, which will help for developing appropriate postharvest practices to reduce the loss.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in three intensive mango growing areas viz. Chapai Nawabgonj, Rajshahi and Satkhira, and two urban areas namely, Dhaka and Gazipur. Ten personnel each of grower, arathdar (wholesaler), bepari, and retailer were selected from each growing area for getting data using with pre-tested questionnaires. Equal numbers of arathdars, beparis, and retailers were selected in the urban marketing areas of Dhaka. Consumers were selected only in two urban areas from Dhaka and Gazipur. Data on postharvest practices and losses with other relevant factors were collected from the above regions during the harvesting season of mango in May to June 2010. The collected data were summarized, compiled and analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Traditional postharvest practices such as pre-cooling and packaging were followed by the growers and beparies in the surveyed areas. Sorting practices were not followed at growers, beparies and wholesale level at proper time. The major postharvest loss occurred mainly due to careless harvesting and handling, which caused injuries and lost of marketable quality of mangoes. However, the postharvest losses of mango were 10.0% at growers’ level, 4.7% at transportation, 2.63% at pikars, 6.71% at wholesale, 6.89% at retailers’ and 3.73% at consumers’ level. The packaging losses were 4.01% and 7.11% in plastic crate and bamboo basket, respectively. Therefore, the total postharvest loss at six channels was 34.67%.
