A pot experiment was conducted with three potato varieties at BSPC, Debigonj, Panchogarh during Rabi season of 2008-09 to observe their performance on yield under different soil moisture levels. The variety Cardinal gave highest yield (31-67 t/ha) at 100% FC.

i) To asses the effect of different soil moisture levels on growth and yield of some potato varieties

ii) To find out a suitable moisture level for optimum growth and yield of potato

iii) To find out potato varieties suitable for soil moisture stress.

The experiment was conducted at BSPC, Debigonj, of BARI during Rabi season of 2008-09. The soil moisture levels viz. 100%, 80%, 60% and 40% of field capacity (FC) were maintained. Earthen pots were used having the diameter of 87 cm with 27cm depth. The soil for this pot experiment was collected form field of BSPC. The collected soil was sandy loam textured and almost acidic in reaction. The collected soils were pulverized and inert materials, visible insect pest and plant propagates were removed. Fertilizers were mixed with the soils as per recommended dose of TCRC. Then soils were filled in pots. Each pot contained 11 kg of soils. Field capacity of the soils used in the experiment was determined through Gravimetric method. These required amounts of waster were adjusted to 100, 80, 60 and 40% FC respectively. Moisture treatments were imposed at 30 days after planting (DAP) and that continued up to maturity.
