Study of Some Promising Lines of Jute Against Fungal Disease .

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at Jute Agriculture Experiment Station, Manikgang of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year 2011-2012. Three promising lines of Corchorus olitorius and Four C. capsularis along with respective recommended varieties O-9897 for olitorius and CVL-1 for capsularis were grown. Two separate experiments for olitorius and capsularis varieties were conducted to compare the different fungal diseases among the pipe lines to help to develop disease resistant varieties by breeders. In case of tossa jute variety O-9897 had the lowest fungal diseases (4.25%) recorded before harvest of the crop. The pipe line O-3820 was found 6.25% disease incidence, O-BLG was 7.00%, O-4311 was 8% before harvest. In case of deshi jute, percentage of disease incidence was higher in BJC-5050 (7.67%) followed by BJC-2197 (6.00 %), BJC-5003 (5.00 %), BJC- 5105 (5.67 %)and CVL-1 (5.33 %). The pipe line BJC-5003 showed lowest disease incidence compare to other lines. In case of diseases plant variety CVL-1 and BJC-5105 had the same fibre wt. per plant (93.33g) followed by BJC-5003 (90.00 g).

Objectives:

To study the disease reaction of some promising lines of Corchorus olitorius and C. capsularis and select the best tolerant line to develop new disease resistant variety of jute.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Jute Agriculture Experiment Station, Manikgang of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year 2011-2012. Three promising lines of Corchorus olitorius O-4311, O-3820, BLG and Four C. capsularis are: BJC-2179, BJC-5003, BJC-5050, BJC-5105 along with respective recommended varieties O-9897 for olitorius and CVL-1 for capsularis were supplied by the breeding division and were grown at JAES, Manikgonj. Two separate experiments for olitorius and capsularis varieties were conducted. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size of the experiment was 2.5 x 4.0 m. Agronomical practices and fertilizer doses were applied as per recommendation. No plant protection measures were taken till harvest to facilitate the natural disease occurrence infestations. Disease incidence and severity were recorded. Disease reactions were evaluated on the basis of percentage of affected plants in each line. Relevant data of different characters were recorded from the experimental plots of each replication.
