Agronomy Division, Gazipur

Potato-Maize + Mungbean- T. aman cropping sequence experiment was carried out at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI, Joydebpur for three consecutive years (November 2008 through October 2010) to find out the productive potential of the improved cropping patterns against farmers pattern and the effect of mungbean residue in the cropping pattern. Six cropping sequences incorporating the crops potato, maize, mungbean and T. aman were tested. The results indicated that tuber yield increased from 58.0 to 81.84% (T2 to T6) over farmers dose (T1) and. 1.80 to 15.09% increased over recommended dose (T2) due to inclusion of mungbean in the cropping sequence (T3 to T6). The highest maize grain yield was obtained from T4 (9.25 t/ha) treatment followed by T3 (8.70 t/ha) and T2 (8.39 t/ha) treatment. The results showed that inclusion of mungbean as intercrop in the existing cropping sequence potato-maize-T.aman (T1) in paired row system (T3 and T4) the maize grain yield increased from 3.69 to 10.25%. In component crop, incorporation of mungbean residue in previous year increased 4.38 (T6) to 5.56 % (T4) seed yield. The grain yield of rice was also increased from 12.09 to 40.93% (T2 to T6) compared to farmers practice (T1). Inclusion of mungbean in different cropping sequence, the grain yield of T. aman was increased from 21.59 to 25.71%. The highest REY (25.35 t/ha) was recorded from the cropping sequence Potato-Maize + Mungbean (residue incorporated)-T.aman (T4) followed by Potato-Maize + Mungbean (uprooted) T. aman (24.06 t/ha) (T3) sequence. The maximum BCR was found in T4 (1.95) followed by T3 (1.84). Treatment T1 gave the lowest BCR (1.27). Three years study revealed that inclusion of mungbean as intercrop with maize in Potato-Maize-T.aman cropping sequence showed pronounced effect on the performance of component crops of the sequence. Potato-Maize+Mungbean (residue incorporated)–T.aman sequence produced the highest rice equivalent yield of crop sequence and maximum profitability in terms of BCR. Incorporation of mungbean residue increased about 6% of each of potato and maize yield and 3% T.aman yield, respectively.

To find out the productive potential of the improved cropping pattern against farmers pattern and the effect of mungbean residue in the cropping pattern.

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI Joydebpur (AEZ 28) for three consecutive years (November 2008 through October 2010). Six treatments of cropping sequence were as follows: T1= FP: Potato-Maize-T. Aman (farmers does), T2= FP: Potato-Maize-T. Aman (recommended fertilizer), T3= AP: Potato-Maize + Mungbean (uprooted). -T.Aman, T4= AP: Potato-Maize + Mungbean (residue incorporated)-T.Aman, T5= AP: Potato-Mungbean (uprooted)-T.Aman, T6= AP: Potato- Mungbean (residue incorporated). -T.Aman, Were, FP = Farmers Pattern and AP = Alternate Pattern. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3.6m x 4.5m. Farmers’ fertilizer dose was used in T1 while recommended fertilizer doses were used in other treatments. Potato was the 1st crop of the pattern and grown during rabi season. Half N and full amount of PKSZnB were applied as basal in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Potato tubers (cv. Cardinal) were planted with 60 cm x 25 cm spacing on 20 to 30 November. The remaining ½ N was top-dressed at 30 days after planting (DAP) followed by earthing up and irrigation. Other two irrigations were given at 20 and 60 DAP. Intercultural operations were done as and when required. Potato was harvested on 18 to 28 February. Yield components were taken from randomly selected 10 plants. Tuber and foliage (over dry) weight were taken from whole plot. After potato, maize and mungbean was grown during Kharif-I season. In maize 1/2 N and all other fertilizers were applied as basal in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively and the remaining N was top dressed at 25 and 45 days after sowing (DAS). In mungbean, of all fertilizers were applied as basal. Seeds of maize (cv. BARI hybrid maize-5) and mungbean (cv. BARI mung-6) were sown on March. A pre-sowing irrigation was given for proper emergence of the crop. Other two irrigations were given at 25 and 45 DAP. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Yield components were taken from randomly selected 10 plants. Grain and seed yield of maize and mungbean and biomass weight of mungbean were taken from entire plot. After harvesting of pods, mungbean plants were uprooted or incorporated into the soil. After maize and mungbean, transplanted aman (T.aman) rice was grown during the Kharif II season.

Potato-Maize+Mungbean (residue incorporated)–T.aman sequence produced the highest rice equivalent yield of crop sequence and maximum profitability in terms of BCR. Incorporation of mungbean residue increased about 6% potato tuber and 6% maize yield and 3% T.aman yield. Mungbean could be grown as intercrop with maize in a paired row system in Potato-Maize-T.aman cropping pattern.
