A trial was conducted at the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site Modhupur, Tangail during 2011-12 to improve the existing cropping pattern Mustard - Boro - T. Aman for higher yield and economic return. Experiment was laid out in RCB design with six dispersed replications. Improved cropping pattern Mustard - Boro - Jute -T. Aman was tested against the existing pattern. The improve cropping pattern gave the higher gross margin (152017 and 158528 Tk ha -1) compared to existing pattern (72914 and 67429 Tk ha-1) at the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site Modhupur, respectively.

The trial was conducted to improve the existing cropping pattern, increase cropping intensity and for higher yield and economic return.

The improved cropping pattern with Mustard (BARI Sarisha-14/15) - Boro (BRRI dhan-28)-Jute (0-9897)- T. Aman (BINA dhan-7/BRRI dhan-49) against the existing pattern Mustard (Tori-7)-Boro (BRRI dhan-29) - T. Aman (BRRI dhan-39/Pajam) was initiated under medium high land situation at the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site Modhupur, Tangail during 2011-12 to improve the existing cropping pattern, increase cropping intensity, higher yield and economic return. It was laid out in RCB design with six dispersed replications in both the locations. Unit plot size was 10m×8m. Recommended fertilizer packages (FRG, 2005) following the application methods were used for all the crops. Irrigation, pest managements and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Crop cut was done from an area of 2m2 at three spots from each plot for yield samples in all cases.

In the improve pattern BARI Sarisha-14 & 15 gave higher seed yield (1413 & 1510 kg ha-1) over Tori-7 (732 & 785 kg ha-1) at the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site, Modhupur, respectively. But the crop duration of modern mustard varieties viz. BARI Sarisha-14 and BARI Sarisha-15, a bit longer (4-5 days ) than Tori-7. BRRI Dhan-28 gave lower yield (5.79 & 5.61 t ha -1) than the BRRI Dhan-29 (6.37& 6.32 t ha -1) at the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site, Modhupur, respectively. At the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site, Modhupur jute yield was 2.56 and 2.41t ha,-1 respectively. At the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site, Modhupur BINA dhan-7 and BRRI dhan-49 gave higher yield (4.29 & 4.56 t ha -1) compared to BRRI dhan-39 & Pajam (3.86 &2.73 t ha -1). Mustard and T. Aman rice yield were increased by 92-93% and 10 -40.13%, respectively due to application of balance fertilizer, appropriate seedling rate and age, better management practice and also due to inclusion of modern variety in case of mustard and T. Aman rice. Yield was decreased in boro rice by 10-12%. But BRRI Dhan-28 mature 20-21 days earlier than BRRI Dhan-29 which is helpful for growing jute as an addition crop between boro and T. Aman rice. From one year pattern it was observed that the higher total gross margin 1,52,017 Tk. ha-1 and 1,58,528 Tk. ha-1 was obtained from improve cropping pattern Mustard (BARI Sarisha-14/15) - Boro (BRRI dhan- 28)- Jute (0-9897)-T. Aman (BINA dhan-7/BRRI dhan-49) against existing cropping pattern Mustard (Tori-7)-Boro (BRRI dhan-29) -T. Aman (BRRI dhan-39/Pajam) 72,914 Tk. ha-1 and 67,829 Tk. ha-1at the FSRD site, Elenga and MLT site Modhupur, respectively. Final conclusion will be drawn after 2nd cycle completion.
