Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Guide, Mirjagong

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mirjagong upazila lies between 22o13; and 22o29; north latitude and 90o08 and 90o19 east longitude and covers an area of 17,552 ha. It lies in the physiographic unit of ganges tidal floof Plain. The upazila comprises of 6 unions having a population of 1,18,054 (2001). Three land types namely highland, medium highland and medium low land were identified. The textural classes of soil found were clay,clay loam and loam. Four soil groups were identified. Six major cropping patterns were found in the upazila. Total 67 soil samples were collected and analyzed and found that the soils of the upazila are deficient in almost all essential nutrient elements except Ca, Mg, S,B, Cu, Fe and Mn. The upazila comprises of highland and medium highland, so the area is suitable for Taman, Taus, rabi vegetables and other upland crops. The climate, land form and geo-morphological environment of the area are also suitable for mung bean .Mirjagong upazila was first surveyed in 1992 and updated in 2007.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and land form map was prepared using 1:50000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soils were collected. The sampling frequency was 1 (one) sample per 200 ha. During survey, crops, cropping pattern, soil management data were collected by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops was made. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Mirjagong upazila is situated in the western part of Patuakhali district. It lies under the AEZ no. 13 (Ganges tidal floodplain. In this upazila major land type recognized was medium highland comprising 61.8% of total area followed by miscellaneous land comprising 32.8% of the total area. Major textural class also identified was clay covering 33.9% of total area followed by clay loam (29.7%). Four soil groups were identified namely Jhalakathi, Barisal, ramgati, and ganges tidal silty alluvium. In medium highland barisal covers major area (30.7%) while in medium highland Jhalakathi covers major area (27.5%). According to local agro-ecology suitable crops identified were rabi vegetables, chilli, groundnut, Taus, Taman, khesari, mungbean, sweet potato etc. The area is most suitable for Taman, Taus and rabi vegetables. Six major cropping pattern namely Mugbean/groundnut-fallow-TamanI/ CHILLI/sweet potato- fallow- Taman, MUNGBEAN/chilli/khesari-Taus- Taman, Mung bean/khesari/chilli/sweet potato-Taus, Fallow-Taus-Taman, fallow-fallow-Taman were identified. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops is given in the guide. The guide can be used for determining flood and drought, salinity, soil erosion, river bank erosion affected area. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
