Screening of Germplasm for Higher Fibre Yield and Desirable Traits of Tossa Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried-out at BJRI, Dhaka and JAES, Manikganj in 2012.Ninety seven (accessionsno.1201-accessionsno.1297) tossa jute along with two varieties O-9897 and BJRI Tossa pat-4 (O-72)were were collected and grown at BJRI,Dhaka and JAES, Manikganj in 2012.The materials were sown in three meters length and three lines for each germplasm maintaining RCBD method. Only forty two germplasm (1201,1203,12071209,1210, 1211,1214,1215,1217,1221,1222,1223,1225,1227,1226,1230,1231,1233,1235,1236,1238,1240,1242,1248,1251,1254,1257,1258,1260,1263,1265,1266,1267,1269,1270,1271,1275,1277,1279,1282,1284,and 1290)were identified as desirable type which are extra plant height,narrow leaves,comparatively lower leaf angle and no diseases symptom on it's body at all.Selected lines will be grown for further assessment and then desirable type will be used for breeding program.

Objectives:

To screen out of high yielding and specific objective fulfill germplasm from collected gene bank To find out any germplasm which is diseases and pest resistant from collected gene bank

Methodology:

Bangladesh Jute Research Institute has 6060 germplasm of jute and allied fibre yielding crop of both indigenous and exotic origin.These germplasm materials have wider gene pool with different types of biotic and abiotic tolerance characters. Ninety seven(accessionsno.1201-accessionsno.1297) germplasm along with two varieties O-9897 and BJRI Tossa pat-4(O-72)were were collected and grown at BJRI,Dhaka and JAES, Manikganj in 2012.The materials were sown in three meters length and three lines for each germplasm maintaining RCBD method.Proper intercultural and agronomic practices were followed for raising the crop.Among the sowing materials only ninety one germplasm were germinated excluding 1205,1220,1239,1250,1281 and 1293 but desirable type which are extra plant height,narrow leaves,comparatively lower leaf angle and no diseases symptom on it's body at all.The sown materials were harvested after 120 days of sowing.
