Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute carpet is a new addition in jute manufacturing industries but it has got some limitation as regards its properties and performance standard particularly in color fading. For this purpose various properties of jute carpet viz. dye remove of the different dyed samples by soap, soda and washing at different time and temperature change in color after washing and rubbing were also studied accordingly. It was found from the all observations that color fading or washing problems of jute carpet can be minimized by using selected dyes, normal temperature and dry washing.

Objectives:

To develop a method of dyeing and printing for jute products.

Methodology:

Dyed jute samples supplied from different carpet mills and soap, soda and other chemicals were used in this study. Different types samples were washed with standard procedure recommended by ISO. According to ISO wash fastness test no. 1, the dyed fibers or yarns were washed in a solution containing 5g/l soap at 40OC± 2OC for 30 minutes at the liquor ratio 1:50. The amount of dye removed by this treatment was measured spectroscopically. After through washing and drying the change in color of washed samples were assessed with the help of grey scale by the comparison with unwashed one. Change in color after rubbing of the dyed fibers or yarns were measured by rubbing fastness at dry and wet cotton on dye fiber and yarns by crock meter and the amount of color taken up by dry and wet cotton fabrics were determined with the assessment of rubbing fastness by the grey scale.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that removal of dyes of different samples were different due to separate shade of dyes were used and addition of soap, soda and increase of temperature. It was also observed that the removal of dyes of the same sample were higher after washing with ISO test no.-3 than ISO test no. 1 due to effect of higher temperature and variation of used detergent. It was further observed from the data color fading after washing was increased with the increase of temperature and addition of soda. It was also found that color fading was higher is wet rubbing than dry rubbing. The maximum color fading has been taken place in wet condition. It can be concluded that color fading of jute carpet can be minimized in wet condition by using selected dyes, mild soap and normal temperature and this problem can be also be overcome by vacuum dry cleaning or dry washing.
