A field experiment on LAI, canopy light interception, dry matter production and grain yield of hybrid maize was conducted at Joydebpur and RARS, Jamalpur during two consecutive rabi (2009-2010, 2010-2011) and kharif-1 seasons (2010 and 2011). Three maize varieties (BARI hybrid maize 5, BARI hybrid maize 7 and Pacific 11) were tested with three plant spacing; 75 cm x 25 cm (53333 plants/ha), 75 cm x 20 cm (66666 plants/ha) and 60 cm x 20 cm (83333 plants/ha). LAI as well as light interception increased with the increases of plant population, which influenced grain yield. Plant population showed significant influence on grain yield. In rabi season, the highest grain yields (10.88 t/ha and 11.02 t/ha at Joydebpur; and 9.48 t/ha and 12.15 t/ha at Jamalpur) were recorded with 60 cm x 20 cm spacing corresponding to 83333 plants/ha and the lowest (8.17 t/ha and 8.96 t/ha at Joydebpur; and 8.01 t/ha and 10.15 t/ha at Jamalpur) in 53333 plants/ha corresponding to 75 cm x 25 cm spacing over the years. In kharif-1 season, the grain yields were lower than those of rabi. However, similar trend was observed over locations over the years. Among the varieties, BARI hybrid maize 7 and Pacific 11 gave better yield than that of BARI hybrid maize 5. Results revealed that irrespective of variety, LAI increased with the increase of plant population, which intercepted more photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and produced higher grain yield. Interaction effect of variety and plant population was insignificant.

To find out appropriate plant population for hybrid maize on the basis of LAI, canopy light interception, dry matter production and grain yield.

The experiment was conducted at the Research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, and RARS, Jamalpur during two consecutive rabi (2009-2010 and 2010-2011) and kharif 1 seasons (2010 and 2011). Three maize varieties, V1 = BARI hybrid maize 5, V2 = BARI hybrid maize 7 and V3 = Pacific 11 and three plant spacing: T1 = 75 cm x 25 cm (53333 plants/ha), T2 = 75 cm x 20 cm (66666 plants/ha) and T3 = 60 cm x 20 cm (83333 plants/ha) were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 6 m x 4 m. In rabi seasons, seeds were sown on November 12, 2009 and November 24, 2010 at Joydebpur while at Jamalpur those were November 19, 2009 and November 20, 2010. In kharif seasons, sowing dates were March 8, 2010 and March 12, 2011 at Joydebpur while those were April 7, 2010 and March 6, 2011. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 250-55-100-30 kg/ha N, P, K and S as urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum. One third of N and whole amount of TSP, MOP and gypsum were applied as basal. Remaining 2/3 N was top-dressed at 40 and 70 days after sowing (DAS). Irrigation was given as and when required to maintain adequate soil moisture. Light interception was measured with PAR Ceptometer (LP-80, AccuPAR, Decagon, USA) and plants were sampled at different growth stages for leaf area and dry matter content. Leaf area was measured by an automatic area meter (LI 3100 C, LI-COR, USA). For dry matter, plant samples were dried in an oven at 80 0C for 72 hours. Maize was harvested at 145 to 150 DAS in rabi season while 110 to 112 DAS at kharif season at both the locations. The yield components data were collected from 5 randomly selected plants prior to harvest from each plot. At harvest, the yield data was recorded plot wise and analyzed statistically.
