Economic Analysis of BARI Masur and Mustard Cultivation in Selected Areas of Bangladesh: a Comparative Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Pabna and Jessore districts to know the farm level input use pattern and profitability of BARImasur and mustard cultivation during 2006-07. A total of 140 farmers taking 70 farmers for each crop were interviewed. The study revealed that the uses of manure, urea, TSP, MP and irrigation in mustard cultivation were significantly higher than that of BARImasur cultivation. The BARI masur farmer received significantly higher gross margin (Tk. 26,616/ha) than that of mustard farmers (Tk.18,452/ha). The benefit cost ratio of BARImasur and mustard cultivation was 3.02 and 2.25 respectively. The cost of per kilogram of BARImasur and mustard production was found to be Tk 13.86 and Tk 12.34 and per kilogram return was found to be Tk 28.05 and 15.47 respectively. Based on the secondary information, the highest benefit cost ratio was obtained from potato 3.15 followed by BARI masur 3.02 among the competitive crops.

Objectives:

To ascertain the profitability of these crops.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two districts namely Pabna and Jessore during Rabi season, 2007. Sadar Upazila from Pabna district and Jhikorgacha Upazila from Jessore district were purposively selected for the study. A total of 140 farmers taking 70 farmers from each crop were randomly selected with the help of DAE personnel for interview. Field investigators under the direct supervision of the researchers collected field level cross sectional data using pre-tested interview schedule. Secondary data on other competing crops such as wheat, maize and potato were also used in this study to show comparative profitability of BARI masur cultivation. Collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. Tabular method of analysis using statistical tools was used in presenting the results of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

The average cost of production was found Tk 13,156/ha and Tk 14,717/ha for BARI masur and mustard respectively. The shares of cash expenses were 72% and 70% for BARI masur and mustard cultivation respectively. The cost of production was found higher in mustard cultivation compared to BARI masur due to increased use of manure, fertilizer and irrigation. The average per hectare yield of BARI masur and mustard was found to be 949 kg and 1193 kg in the study areas respectively. The BARI masur farmers received significantly higher gross return and gross margin as compared to the mustard farmers. Although the yield was higher in mustard but return was more in BARI masur because of higher market price of BARI masur. Based on the secondary information comparison was made within the competitive crops potato, wheat and maize. It is visualized that the second highest profit was obtained from BARI masur among the competitive crops.
