Effect of Chemicals on Enhancing the Vase Life of Gerbera (gerbera Jamesonii)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Gerbera cv. ‘GJ-0182’ flowers were harvested early in the morning in fresh form. Flower sticks were then transferred to the bottle containing different vase solutions at ambient temperature of 24-27⁰C and 65-80% RH. Sticks held in vase solution contained 4% sucrose + 250 or 300 ppm AgNO₃ maintained maximum vase life of 14 days as compared to control for 10 days only. Stem rotting of the sticks occurred when held in solutions free from AgNO₃. Maximum amount (158.67g) of water was absorbed by the sticks held in solution of 4% sucrose + 250 or 300 ppm AgNO₃). Thus, vase solution containing 4% sucrose + 250 ppm AgNO₃could be used as a simple technique for enhancing the postharvest life of Gerbera stick.

Objectives:

To prolong the vase life of cut gerbera blooms through use of floral preservatives.

Methodology:

Floral sticks of gerbera cv. ‘GJ-018’ were harvested when the outer two rows of disc florets were perpendiculars to the stalk. The flowers were harvested early in the morning and immediately placed in water. The stalks were cut again prior to place them in holding solution to study the keeping quality. Ten treatments of vase solutions were used in this experiment. The treatments were T₁=2% Sucrose + 200ppm AgNO3, T₂=4% Sucrose+ 200ppm AgNO₃, T₃=2% Sucrose+ 250ppm AgNO3, T₄=4% Sucrose+ 250ppm AgNO3, T₅=2% Sucrose+ 300ppm AgNO₃, T₆=4% Sucrose+ 300ppm AgNO3, T₇=30ppm sodium hypochlorite, T₈=40ppm sodium hypochlorite, T₉=50ppm sodium hypochlorite, T₁₀= tap water (Control). Glass bottles were used to hold the floral preservatives which were prepared freshly and dispensed into the bottles. The bottles were kept at room temperature 24-27⁰C) and 65-80% RH with adequate aeration. Two floral stalks were placed in each bottle. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with three replications. Data were recorded for fresh weight loss, vase life, total quantity of solution uptake, total quantity of solution loss, loss uptake ratio, incidence of stem rotting etc.

Achievement/Findings:

Vase solution contained 4% sucrose + 250 or 300 ppm AgNO₃ found better for prolonging vase life of 14 days as compared to control treatment for 10 days only. Maximum amount (158.67g) of water was absorbed by the sticks held in that solution. Thus, vase solution containing 4% sucrose + 250 ppm AgNO₃ could be used as a simple technique for enhancing the postharvest life of Gerbera stick without excessive loss in quality.
