Characterization of Bottle Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two hundred sixty eight germplasms of bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) showed qualitative variations in leaf size, leaf lobes, leaf pubescence, peduncle transactional shape, peduncle separation, fruit skin texture, fruit lustre, fruit skin hardness, stem-end fruit shape, fruit apex shape, fruit ribs, fruit skin color at table use maturity and fruit size. All the germplasm showed viny growth habit, dented leaf margin, presence of tendrils, angular stem shape, white flesh color, insipid flesh flavor, monoecious sex type and white flower color. Early flowering was observed both in staminate (49 days) and pistillate flowers (55 days) in the accession BD-380.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Two hundred sixty eight germplasms of bottle gourd were characterized during winter of 2006-2007 at PGRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The seeds were sown in polyethylene on November 19, 2006. The seedlings were transplanted in prepared pits on December 5, 2006. Two seedlings of each germplasm were planted in a 3 x 3m pit. Recommended fertilizer dose and cultural practices were followed. Morphological observations were recorded as per IBPGR descriptors.

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the qualitative characters such as leaf size, leaf lobes, leaf pubescence, peduncle transactional shape, peduncle separation from fruit, fruit skin texture, fruit lustre, fruit skin hardness, stem-end fruit shape, fruit apex shape, fruit ribs, fruit skin color at table use maturity and fruit size variability showed morphological variations. But the characters growth habit, leaf margin, tendrils, stems shape, flesh color. flesh flavor, sex type and flower color observed no morphological variations. Early flowering was observed both in staminate (55 days) and pistillate flowers (49 days) in the accession BD-380.
