Effect of Garlic and Cinnamon on Broiler Production as Antibacterial and Anti-conccidial Agents

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to explore the use of dietary garlic and cinnamon in broiler diet as antibacterial and anticoccidial agent. Different levels of garlic and cinnamon were used to determine actual combination for proper growth, feed conversion ratio (FCR), also found the actual combination of garlic and cinnamon for antibacterial and anticoccidial agents.

Objectives:

To explore the use of dietary garlic and cinnamon in broiler diet as antibacterial and anticoccidial agent.

Methodology:

A total of 240 Cobb-500 broiler day old chicks (purchased for Kazi Farm Ltd.) were randomly allocated to 8 experimental treatments. Each treatment consisted of 3 replicate pens with 10 birds each. Each pen was 1m x 1m. The birds were reared in floor using rice husk as litter materials. The lighting program was set with 24 hours light per day. The temperature was set at 90O F during the 1st week and gradually declined with 50 F per week until 700 F was reached. Relative humidity was about 65-70% RH. The broilers were free access to water. The birds were reared for 30 days. Experimental design T_{1 :} 1% garlic of total feed intake T₂ : 2% garlic of total feed intake T₃: 1% cinnamon of total feed intake T₄ : 2% cinnamon of total feed intake T₅ : 1% garlic + 1% cinnamon of total feed intake T₆ : 2% garlic + 2% cinnamon of total feed intake T₇ : Only antibiotics (as per recommendation of manufacturer) T₈-Control : No antibiotics, no garlic & no cinnamon Vaccinations: Name of vaccine Time of vaccination Route of vaccination IB+ND Vaccine- Live Day Old chick Eye drop (Infectious Bronchitis Newcastle Disease vaccine) Gumboro vaccine -Live 9 days old chick Eye drop Gumboro vaccine-Live 18 days old chick Eye drop.

Achievement/Findings:

Present study showed that supplementation of 2% garlic + 2% cinnamon (T₆₎ was significantly higher body weight. Low FCR means best result and high FCR means worst result. In this study, high FCR was found in T₈(control)group. Significantly lower FCR ws found in T₆ group followed by T₅ and T₄, respectively (P<0.05). It means T6 is the best group than T₅ and T_4, repectively. T₈ is the worst. No bacterial and coccidial disease were found in treatment T₁, T₂, T_3, T₄, T_5, T₆, T₇ (P<0.05). Only T8(control) group was suffered with respiratory disease, due to bacteria and bloody faecal due to coccidian. It indicates that garlic and cinnamon can be used as antibacterial and anticoccidial agents. Significantly more profit was recorded in T₅ (43.88 Tk profit per broiler). Residual effect of antibiotics in broiler meat is harmful for human health. Present study concluded that more profitable broiler farming is possible without antibiotics and farmers can run broiler farms with garlic and cinnamon as antibacterial and anticoccidial agents. T₅ (1% garlic + 1% cinnamon is the best combination for profitable broiler farming.
