Effect of Different Organic Manures and Nitrogen Levels on Yield and Yield Attributes of T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate yield and yield attributes of BRRI Dhan 32 as affected by organic manure with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer. 4 levels of organic manure, viz. control, Sesbania rostrata, Mimosa invisa and cowdung at the rate of 15 t ha^-1 each, and five levels of nitrogen 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the recommended dose of nitrogen were included in the experiment. It was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. Organic manures showed significant differences in grain yield and yield contributing characters except non-effective tillers, panicle length, and 1000-grain yield. Incorporation of Sesbania rostrata produced the highest yields. N levels also exerted significant effect on all the yield parameters. The highest grain yield was obtained from the treatment application of 75% of the recommended dose of nitrogen. The highest grain yield (5.38 t ha^-1) was obtained from Sesbania rostrata with 50% of the recommended dose of nitrogen which was identical to Sesbania rostrata×75% N, Mimosa invisa×75% N and cowdung×75% N. Incorporation of Sesbania rostrata along with 50% of the recommended dose of N showed to be the best fertilizer combination for higher grain yield of T. aman rice.

Objectives:

1. In order to study the growth and yield of T. aman rice as affected by organic manure with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer.

2. In view of the above proposition a study was therefore, undertaken to formulate an input package with a combination of organic manures and inorganic fertilizers so that it would be agronomically effective and feasible for T. aman rice production.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh in 2001. Treatment: two factors- Factor A. Types of organic manure– (i) Control (no organic manure), (ii) Sesbania rostrata (15 t ha^-1), (iii) Mimosa invisa (15 t ha^-1), (iv) Cowdung (15 t ha^-1). Factor B. Levels of nitrogen (i) Control (0 kg ha^-1), (ii) 25% of the total nitrogen recommended dose (17.25 kg ha^-1), (iii) 50% of the total nitrogen recommended dose (34.5 kg ha^-1) , (iv) 75% of the total nitrogen recommended dose (51.75 kg ha^-1), (v) 100% of the total nitrogen recommended dose (69 kg ha^-1). Recommended dose is 150 kg urea ha^-1 i.e. 69 kg nitrogen ha^-1. It was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. The field was divided into 3 blocks. Each block was divided into 20 unit plots 4m × 2.5m each. Space left between blocks and unit plots were 1.0m and 0.5m, respectively. Seeds of BRRI Dhan 32 were used. Sprouted rice seeds were sown in the wet nursery bed on 28 June 2001. TSP, MOP, Sulphur and Zinc fertilizers were applied in the plots at the rates of 100, 70, 60 and 10 kg ha^-1, respectively at the time of final land preparation. The whole amount of urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 DAT. 35 day old seedlings were transplanted on 2 August 2001 in the main field with 2-3 seedlings hill^-1 at 20 cm×15 cm spacing. Cultural operation was done when necessary. The crop was harvested at full maturity on 8 November 2001. For data collection, five hills were selected from each plot randomly. Analysis of recorded data was done with the help of computer package MSTAT. The mean differences among the treatments were adjudged as per Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984)

Achievement/Findings:
