Field experiment with three varieties of mustard viz. Improved Tori 7, BARI sarisha 9 and BARI sarisha 14 and four harvesting time viz. T1 = Green pod stage (60 DAE for Tori 7, 70 DAE for BARI sarisha 9 and BARI sarisha 14), T2 = Pale yellow pod stage (65 DAE for Tori 7, 75 DAE for BARI sarisha 9 and BARI sarisha 14), T3 = Golden yellow pod stage (70 DAE for Tori 7, 79 DAE for BARI sarisha 9 and BARI sarisha 14) and T4 = Maturity stage (75 DAE for Tori 7, 83 DAE for BARI sarisha 9 and BARI sarisha 14) was conducted during rabi season of 2008-09 at Joydebpur to reduce the field duration of mustard without reducing yield and oil content. Among varieties, BARI sarisha 14 produced the highest seed yield (907 kg/ha) which was identical to the yield of BARI sarisha 9 (899 kg/ha) and Improved Tori 7 (860 kg/ha) at maturity stage. Seed yield and oil content increased towards maturity in all the varieties. Seed yield and oil content in golden yellow pod and maturity stage was identical in Improved Tori 7 and BARI sarisha 14. But in BARI sarisha 9, it was similar in pale yellow pod, golden yellow pod and maturity stage. The results revealed that Improved Tori 7 is suitable for short duration (emergence to harvest: 75 days). Alternately, BARI sarisha 9 may be harvested at pale yellow pod stage (75 DAE) without reducing seed yield and oil content.

To  reduce the field duration of mustard without reducing yield and oil content

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2008-2009. The soil was silty clay loam in texture belonging to Chhiata series of Grey Terrace Soil. Three varieties of mustard viz. Improved Tori- 7, BARI sarisha-9 and BARI sarisha-14 and four harvesting time viz. T1 = Green pod stage (cut at 60 DAE for Tori-7, 70 DAE for BARI sarisha-9 and BARI sarisha-14 and then heap), T2 = Pale yellow pod stage (cut at 65 DAE for Tori-7, 75 DAE for BARI sarisha-9 and BARI sarisha-14 and then heap), T3 = Golden yellow pod stage (cut at 70 DAE for Tori-7, 79 DAE for BARI sarisha-9 and BARI sarisha-14 and then heap) and T4 = Maturity stage (cut at 75 DAE for Tori-7, 83 DAE for BARI sarisha-9 and BARI sarisha-14 and then heap) were used as treatment variables. Seed processing was done after 12, 8, 6 and 4 days for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th harvesting, respectively. The trial was set up in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.0m x 3.0m. The crop was fertilized with 55-15-35-10-1-1 kg N, P, K, S, Zn and B/ha, respectively (FRG, 2005). Half of N and full doses of other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. Seeds of mustard varieties were sown in lines 30 cm apart on November 14, 2008. At 3-leaf stage a spacing of 5 cm between plant to plant was maintained. The remaining half of N was top dressed at 25 days after emergence (DAE) followed by irrigation. A light irrigation was given to the crop for uniform emergence. Admire 200SL @ 1 ml/10 liter of water was sprayed at 15 and 30 DAE to control Jassids. At each harvesting time, five plants were harvested randomly from each plot to record the data on yield components. Seed yield was recorded from an area of 3 m x 2 m. Data on different parameters were subjected to analysis of variance and the treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

The results revealed that Improved Tori 7 is suitable for short duration (emergence to harvest: 75 days) variety. Alternately, BARI sarisha 9 may be harvested at pale yellow pod stage (75 DAE) without reducing seed yield and oil content.
