A performance trial with 14 genotypes of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) was conducted at Banglabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during rabi season of 1999-2000. The genotypes varied significantly for most of the parameters. The genotype CR0024 produced flower stalk within the shortest possible period of 43 days, whereas genotypes CR0008 and CR00l3 took the logest period (52.25 and 52.00 days, respectively) for flower stalk emergence. Regarding days to 50% flowering, CR00013 took the maximum days (67.75) followed by CR0008 (67.00 days), whereas CR0024 flowered 10-11 days earlier than the former two. The genotype CR0021 produced the highest number of umbels per plant (52.23), while CR00ll produced the lowest (26.15). The highest percentage of fruit set (47.96) was observed in CR00l6 and the lowest in CR0024 (26.85). The genotype CR0024 took the shortest period (97.25 days) for harvesting seeds, whereas CR0008 took the longest period (111.00 days). The genotype CR0001 produced the highest seed yield per plant (11.30g) as well as per hectare (1.73 t). Moreover, the genotypes CR0008 and CR0013 had the lowest seed yield (7.30g/plant and 0.86 t/ha). The genotype CR00l8 had the highest 1000-seed weight (11.75g) and the lowest in both CR0013 and CR0020 (l0.25g). Considering seed germination, the gentoype CR0022 exhibited the highest score (78.25%) and CR0013 had the lowest (68.25%). It might be inferred from the study that the genotypes differed significantly in most of the characters and offer a good scope of selection of better genotypes for desired traits.

i) To evaluate the morphological traits of different genotypes.

ii) To select the promising one(s) for higher seed yield with better quality.

The investigation was carried out at the Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur, Bangladesh during November 1999 to March 2000. Fourteen genotypes of coriander viz., CR0001, CR0008, CR0011, CR0013, CR0014, CR0016, CR0017, CR0018, CR0019, CR0020, CR0021, CR0022, CR0023 and CR0024 collected from the Spices Research sub-Cenrte, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur were included in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. The unit plot size was 2.0m x 1.5m accommodating 100 plants in a plot having row and plant spacing of 30cm and 10cm, respectively. The experimental plot was fertilized with cowdung, urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum @ 10 t, 174 kg, 178 kg, 133 kg and 111 kg/ha, respectively (Anon., 1998). The entire quantity of cowdung, TSP, MP, gypsum and half of urea were applied as basal dose during final land preparation (7 days before seed sowing) and remaining 50% of urea was applied 30 days after sowing. The seeds were rubbed for separating the two mericarps and soaked in water for 24 hours to enhance germination. Seeds were also treated with Dithane M-45 at 2 g/kg before sowing. The seeds were drilled in rows by hand @ 15-20 kg/ha. The sowing was done on 18 November 1999 and a slight watering was done to ensure moisture for germination. Seedlings were thinned maintaining 2 seedlings/hill after 15 and 20 days of sowing. The experimental field was kept weed free by hand weeding. First irrigation was applied three days after sowing and thereafter 10 to 15 days interval depending upon the soil moisture. Other intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Seeds were harvested when half of the fruits turned brown colour. To avoid shattering, harvesting was done early in the morning. The data on 50% germination, days to flower stalk emergence, days to 50% flowering, number of umbels/plant, number of umbellets/umbel, percentage of fruit set (calculated by dividing the total number of fruits/umbel with number of perfect flowers/umbel and multiplied by 100), days to harvest of seeds, seed yield/plant, seed yield/ha (converted from plot yield), weight of 1000 seeds and percentage of seed germination were recorded. The data on different parameters were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT software and treatment means were separated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

The present study revealed that there were significant differences among the genotypes in respect of earliness as well as yield potentials. The results suggest that the genotypes CROOOI, CR0011, CR0014, CROOI6, CR0018 and CR0021 may be considered as high yielding genotypes under the agro-ecological condition of Gazipur.
