The experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2008-09 at the farm Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) Joydebpur to find out suitable spices for growing in association with maize. Eight treatment combinations viz. sole hybrid maize (75 cm x 25 cm), sole maize paired row (MPR) (37.5 cm x 150cm/37.5 cm x 25 cm), sole coriander (broadcast), sloe black cumin (broadcast), sole fennel (broadcast), maize paired row (MPR) + coriander broadcast between 2 paired row of maize, maize paired row (MPR) + black cumin broadcast between 2 paired row of maize, maize paired row (MPR) + fennel broadcast between 2 paired row of maize. Intercropping reduced maize yield by 2 to 19% in different treatments. Yield reduction of coriander was minimum (12%) in intercrop situation. But with the addition of spices yields in intercropping increased total productivity in terms of maize equivalent yield (MEY). The highest MEY (14.59 t/ha) was obtained from MPR + fennel broadcast between 2 paired row of maize. This treatment also gave the highest gross return (Tk.175080), net return (Tk.134917) and benefit cost ratio (4.35).

To find out suitable spices crop for intercropping with maize for higher benefit.

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2008-09. Eight treatments were tested in Randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were: sole hybrid maize (75 cm x 25 cm), sole maize paired row (MPR) (37.5 cm x 150cm/37.5 cm x 25 cm), sole coriander (broadcast), sloe black cumin (broadcast), sole fennel (broadcast), maize paired row (37.5 cm x 150 cm/37.5 cm x 25 cm) + coriander broadcast between 2 paired row of maize, maize paired row (37.5 cm x 150 cm/37.5 cm x 25 cm) + black cumin broadcast between 2 paired row of maize, maize paired row (37.5 cm x 150 cm/37.5 cm x 25 cm) + fennel broadcast between 2 paired row of maize. The unit plot size was 4.5m x 3 m. Seeds of maize (BARI hybrid maize-5), coriander (BARI coriander-1), black cumin (BARI Kalizira-1) and fennel (BARI fennel-1) were sown on November 25, 2008. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 250-55-110-50-5 kg/ha of NPKSZn for maize and intercrop; 120-80-20-4 kg/ha of NPKS for sole coriander, 45-20-37.35 kg/ha of NPK for sole black cumin and 60-18 kg/ha of NP for sole fennel in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and zinc sulphat. One third of nitrogen and full amount of other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation in sole maize and intercrop treatment. The rest two third nitrogen were applied in tow equal splits at the time of 30 and 60 days after sowing in maize rows (sole & intercrop). All fertilizers were applied as basal for sole coriander. One half of N, entire quantity of PK were applied during land preparation for black cumin. The rest ½ N was applied at 40 days after sowing. On the other hand, ½ N and whole of P were applied as basal for sole fennel and remaining ½ N was applied to crop just before flowering. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Black cumin, coriander, fennel and maize were harvested on 9 March, 2009, 15 March 2009, 19 April 2009, and 21 April 2009, respectively. The yield component data of black cumin, coriander, fennel and maize was collected from 5 randomly selected plants prior to harvest from each plot. The collected data were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT programme and the means were adjusted by using LSD. Economic analysis was also done.

The results revealed that intercropping of different spices with hybrid maize is superior to either sole hybrid maize or sole spices. Considering yield reduction, coriander is more suitable for intercropping with hybrid maize. In respect of economics, fennel is superior to other spices under investigation for intercropping with hybrid maize.
