An intercropping experiment comprising brinjal and chili was conducted during rabi seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09 at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur to find out appropriate planting geometry of brinjal for intercropping with chili having minimum crop competition. Different intercropping treatments viz. T1 = 100% chili broadcast + 60% brinjal (100 cm X 75 cm), T2 = 100% chili broadcast + 45% brinjal (100 cm X 100 cm), T3 = 100% chili broadcast + 30% brinjal (100 cm X 150 cm), T4= 100% chili broadcast + 20% brinjal (150 cm X 150 cm) were compared with T5 = sole brinjal (75 cm X 60 cm) and T6 = sole chili broadcast. In both the years, sole chilli (: 13.48 t/ha for 2007-08 and 14.70 t/ha for 2008-09) and sole brinjal (140.10 t/ha for 2007-08 and 150.00 t/ha for 2008-09) produced significantly the highest yield. Chilli yield decreased with increasing brinjal population and brinjal yield decreased with the decrease of brinjal population in intercropping system. The highest chili equivalent yield ((24.33 t/ha for 2007-08 and 27.10 t/ha for 2008-09) gross return ((Tk 486600 /ha for 2007-08 and Tk 542000 /ha for 2008-09) and benefit cost ratio ((6.04 t/ha for 2007-08 and 6.05 t/ha for 2008-09) were observed in 100% chili with 60% brinjal (T1) combination.

To find out appropriate planting geometry of brinjal for intercropping with chilli having minimum crop competition.

The experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2007-08 and 2008-09 at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur. Six treatments viz. T1 = 100% chili broadcast + 60% brinjal (100 cm X 75 cm), T2 = 100% chili broadcast + 45% brinjal (100 cm X 100 cm), T3 = 100% chili broadcast + 30% brinjal (100 cm X 150 cm), T4 = 100% chili broadcast + 20% brinjal (150 cm X 150 cm), T5 = sole brinjal (75 X 60 cm) and T6 = sole chili broadcast were tested in RCB design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was in 6m×3m. BARI Marich 1 and BARI begun-1 were the test cultivar in 2007-08 and local chili and BARI begun 5 were in 2008-09. The seeds of chilli were broadcast and 30 days aged brinjal seedlings were transplanted on September 18, 2007 and October 08, 2008 as per treatment. Fertilizers @ 120-80-120-20-4 kg/ha N P K S Zn were used for sole chili and intercropped treatments. Half N and full amount of other fertilizers were applied as basal. Rest N were top dressed in three equal splits at 25, 50, 70 DAS. Sole brinjal was fertilized at the rate of 160-48-120-20-3-0.9 kg/ha N P K S Zn and B. Except N & K, full amount of all other fertilizer were applied in pit before 1 week of transplantation. N & K were applied in 3 equal splits at 21, 35 & 50 DAT as ring method followed by irrigation. The crop field was also manured with cowdung (8 t/ha) during final land preparation. Weeding, mulching, earthing up, irrigation were made as and when necessary. Harvesting of chilli was done 6-7 times at 10 days interval starting from Mid January to last of April. Brinjal was harvested 5-6 times from mid January to last of March. Data on yield and yield attributes were collected and analyzed statistically and means were compared using DMRT. Chili equivalent yield was computed using standard formula. Economic analysis was also done.

Chilli yield decreased with increasing brinjal population and brinjal yield decreased with the decrease of brinjal population in intercropping system. The highest chilli equivalent yield ((24.33 t/ha for 2007-08 and 27.10 t/ha for 2008-09) gross return ((Tk 486600 /ha for 2007-08 and Tk 542000 /ha for 2008-09) and benefit cost ratio ((6.04 t/ha for 2007-08 and 6.05 t/ha for 2008-09) were observed in 100% chili with 60% brinjal (T1) combination. Two years results revealed that 100% chili broadcast + 60% brinjal (100 cm x 75 cm) would be economically profitable in Rangpur region.
