Population Dynamics of Whitefly in Relation to Climatic Factors on Cultivated Crops and Development of Its Eco-friendly Management Techniques

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three experiments were set in RCBD in field and the treatments were applied at 10 days interval. The population of whitefly was gradually increased with environmental temperature and humidity up to certain age of the cultivated crops then declined with increasing age of the crops. It was lower in okra than bush bean and soybean due to rainfall during the rainy season. All the chemical insecticides reduced the population of whitefly in bush bean and soybean, and increased their yield. In bush bean, imidacloprid showed the best performance by reducing 64.13% population of whitefly and increasing 66.00% yield of fresh fruits. Thiamethoxam also showed the similar performance by reducing 61.65% population of whitefly on soybean and increased 42.11% grain yield. The lowest population of whitefly (4.88/plant) and the highest fruit yield (4.92 t/ha) were obtained by application of dhutra leaf extract on okra. Oleander leaf extract also gave the similar results against whitefly attacking okra. Both plant extracts showed better performance than cypermethrin 10EC in reducing population of whitefly and increasing fruit yield of okra. Application of 10% leaf extract of dhutra or oleander at 10 days interval may be eco-friendly management technique of whitefly in field crops.

Objectives:

To observe the population dynamics of whitefly in relation to climatic factors on different cultivated crops
To develop eco-friendly management practices of whitefly on different cultivated crops in relation to climatic factors
To know the effect of different management practices on the incidence of mosaic disease in different cultivated crops.

Methodology:

Three experiments were carried out separately for bush bean (February – April 2011), okra (May – August 2011) and soybean (January – May 2012) during the period from February 2011 to May 2012 at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. This chapter deals with a brief description of the site, land preparation, intercultural operations, design, treatments, data recording and procedure of statistical analysis. Three experiments were laid out separately for bush bean, okra and soybean in field. For bush bean the treatments were T₁ : Bamper (Imidacloprid) 20SL 0.5 ml/L of water, T₂: Shobicron 425EC 2.0ml/L of water, T₃: Actara (Thiamethoxam) 25WG @ 0.5 g/L of water, T₄ : Chlorpyriphos 20EC @ 2.0 ml?L of water, T₅ : Sinothrin (Cypermethrin) 10EC @1.0 ml/L of water T₆_: Fortap (Cartap) 50SP @ 1.5 g/L of water and T₇_:Untreated control (water). For okra the treatments were T₁: ripcord (cypermethrin) 10EC @ 1.0 ml/L, T₂: 5% Tamarind fruit (Tamarindus indica) extract, T₃_: 10% Neem leaf (Azadirachta indica) extract, T₄: 10% Bullock’s heart leaf (Annona reticulate), T₅: 10% Dodder (Cascuta reflexa), T₆_: 10% Oleander leaf (Nerium oleander), T₇: 10% Dhutra leaf (Datura metel), T₈: 10% Dholkolmi leaf (Ipomoea carnea), and T₉_:untreated control (water). For soybean the treatments were viz., T₁_: Marshal (Carbosulfan) 20EC 3.0 ml/L of water, T₂: Semcap (Fenthoate) 20EC @ 2.0 ml/L, T₃: Drrsban (Chlorpyriphos) 20EC @ 2.0 ml/L of water, T₄: Basathrin (Cypermethrin) 10EC @ 1.0 ml/L, T₅: Filter (Lambdacyhalothrin) 2.5 EC @ 1.0 ml/L, T₆: Shobicron 425EC @ 2.0 ml/L and T₇: Actara (Thiamethoxam) 25WG @ 0.5 g/L, and T₈: untreated control (water). All the experiments were set in randomized completely block design with four replication for bush bean and three replications for okra and soybean.

Achievement/Findings:

High temperature and high humidity increased incidence of whitefly on bush bean, okra and soybean. Imidacloprid and thiamethoxam were the most effective insecticides for the management of whitefly under prevailing environmental condition. Dhutra and oleander leaf extracts were also more effective for the management of the obnoxious pest. Application of these chemical insecticides and plant extracts significantly reduced mosaic disease incidence on the cultivated crops.
