Economics of Indigenous Vegetables for Enhancing Food Security and Sustainable Environment for Hilly Communities in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in two hill districts namely Bandarban and Khagrachhari areas. Agricultural was the main occupation in the both areas. Bandarban farmers possess higher units of land than that of Khagrachhari farmers. Various types of vegetables like Potato, Tomato, Bottlegourd, Cucumber, Radish, etc. were cultivated along with hilly vegetables. The farmers cultivate vegetables for consumption, and also for economic earnings. The also faced some problems to cultivate and consumption the hilly and local vegetables. Capital investment was the main constraint for vegetables cultivation in the both areas.

Objectives:

1. To assess consumption of indigenous vegetables for the hilly communities of two hilly districts.

2. To assess the role of indigenous vegetables in agricultural production on targeted hilly communities

Methodology:

Two hilly districts namely Bandarban and Khagrachhari were selected for the study. Primary data were collected by a pre designed interview schedule. Required data were generated through household survey. About 58 farmers were interviewed by taking 29 farmers from Bandarban and Khagrachhri districts respectively. The collected data were edited, tabulated, summarized and more over analyzed to achieve the objectives of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the vegetables Potato, Tomato, bottle grourd, radish, Brinjal, cucumber etc. were cultivating widely and very popularly for both areas. Cabbage, Cauliflower etc. were cultivated at a small scale.The vegetables namely bean, potato, cucumber, brinjal, radish, red-amaranth etc. were consumed widely for both areas. Bandanban farmers were consuming a local vegetables mainly Marfa, which was not consumed in Khagrachhari farmers.The hilly vegetables namely bashkorol, paharialu, paharikachu, katathor etc. were consumed a large scale in both the areas.the farmers were produced vegetables not only for their consumption but also to sell them in the market. So, a large portion of their production was being sold in the market. They were consumed a little amount of their production. the constraints to vegetables production in all areas were lack of capital opined by 50% farmers followed high price of insecticides (41%), lack of water and irrigation problem (38%), and lack of knowledge of cultivation method (35%), respectively.
