Characterization of Pointed Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty two germplasm of pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.) showed morphological variations in stem pubescence, stem color, leaf color, leaf size and petiole color. Plant growth habit, stem shape, prominence of leaf veins, leaf lobes, leaf pubescence, leaf margin, leaf tip, pedicle color, tendrils and flower color did not show any variations. Quantitative variations were observed in leaf weight, petiole length, internode length, leaf weight, number of female flower per leaf axil, flowering to edible fruit size, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breath, number of seeds per fruit and 100-seed weight. The highest coefficient of variations was found in number of female flower per leaf axil (37.62%) followed by leaf weight (35.02%). and the lowest in 100-seed weight (8.70%).

Objectives:

Methodology:

Twenty two germplasm of pointed gourd were characterized during winter 2000-02 at PGRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Among them, there were 3 male plants. The basal portion of the vine of 11 germplasm were coiled in the shape of a ring and planted on 14 December 2000 in the field maintaining 2.0 m spacing between the plant. The remaining 11 germplasms were planted in earthen pot on May 2001. The seedlings were transplanted on 11 October 2001 in the field maintaining the same spacing. Necessary intercultural operations were followed. Recommended fertilizer doses was applied. The observations were recorded according to descriptors. The average values were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Qualitative characters such as stem pubescence, stem color, leaf color, leaf size and petiole color showed distinct classes among the germplasms. The remaining character viz. plant growth habit, stem shape, prominence of leaf veins, leaf lobes, leaf pubescence, leaf margin, leaf tip, pedicle color, tendrils and flower color did not show any variations. The quantitative characters such as leaf weight, petiole length and inter-node length varied from 4.69-19.15 g, 1.14-2.83 cm and 4.95-9.55 cm, respectively. The germplasms were exhibited variations in fruit length, fruit breath and fruit weight from 7.34- 11.78 cm, 2.52-3.95 cm and 146 – 380g, respectively. Number of female flower per leaf axil, flowering to edible fruit size, number of seeds per fruit and 100-seed weight were 1.0-3.0, 12-20, 14-28 and 7.21–10.94g, respectively.
