An experiment was conducted to study the effect of storage condition and storage duration of scions on the success of veneer grafting in mango during June 1997 to September 1998 at the Mango Research Station, Chapai Nawabgonj. There were 24 treatment combinations comprising 6 levels of storage conditions and 4 levels of storage durations of scions. The highest survival percentage (81.67%) after 60 days of grafting was obtained from the scions stored in sealed polythene bags wrapped with moist cloth. The lowest survival (66.44%) was recorded in case of perforated polythene bags. Regarding storage duration, fresh scions (control treatment) performed better (86.30%) than the stored scions. Scions could be stored upto 9 days with varying degrees (64.44 to 77.41 %) of grafting success.

To find out the best storage material and storage durations of scion for the highest percentage of success of veneer grafting in mango.

The experiment was conducted at the Mango Research Station, BARI, Chapai Nawabgonj during June 1997 to September 1998 to evaluate the effect of storage conditions and storage durations of scions on the success of veneer grafting in mango. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. There were 24 treatment combinations comprising 6 levels of storage conditions (viz. S1: scion stored in sealed polythene bag, S2: scion stored in perforated polythene bag, S3: scion stored in sealed poltyhene bag wrapped with moist newspaper, S4: scion stored in perforated polythene bag wrapped whit moist newspaper, S5: scion stored in sealed polythene bag wrapped with moist cloth, S6: scion stored in perforated polythene bag wrapped with moist cloth) and 4 levels of storage durations (viz.; D1: control (fresh scion), D2: scion stored for 3 days, D3: scion stored for 6 days, D4: scion stored for 9 days). Mango stones obtained from the fruits of seedling trees were sown in well prepared nursery beds in June 1997 and healthy, disease free seedlings of uniform size were selected for the grafting operation. About 1800 terminal shoots, 6-8 months old, of variety BARI Mango-I were selected from six trees. On 10 June 1998, 450 scions of more or less similar age and uniform thickness were collected, packed, and stored in 6 polythene bags according to the treatments. Each bundle contained 25 scion shoots and was stored for 9 days. Similarly, 450 scions for each of the 6 and 3 days storage duration were collected, packed, and stored following the treatment. Another 450 scions were collected on the day of grafting for control treatment. The bags were kept on dry damp proof floor of a well ventilated room up to the date of grafting. Water was sprayed on the bundles of scions inside the polythene bag at 3 days interval during storage. The stored scions and freshly collected scions were grafted by veneer grafting on the selected rootstocks on 20 June 1998. For each treatment, 15 selected scions from each bag were grafted which constituted the unit of plot and was replicated 3 times Necessary measures were taken to make the plots weed and pest free and create a favouable environment to ensure proper growth and development of the plants. The data on days to first sprouting (visible sign of growth of scions) after grafting, days to sprouting in 50% scions, length, and diameter of scion shoot, number of levels per scion shoot, leaf area, number of shoots and flushes per plant and percentage of final survival were recorded 60 days after grafting. Leaf area (cm-2) Y = K. X, where K is constant to (0.737) and x is the length x breadth of leaf.

The present study showed that the storage condition of scion in sealed polythene bag wrapped with moist cloth was the best in respect of initial as well as final success of grafting among the storage conditions. The results also indicated that the storage duration of scion and grafting success are negatively correlated. The scion can be stored successfully for 3 to 9 days with varying degrees of success of veneer grafting (42.22 to 88.89%). So, it is concluded that veneer grafting may be done successfully with a high percentage of success (75.55%) with scions stored upto 9 days in sealed polythene bags and wrapped with moist cloth.
