Seasonal Variation and Storage Condition on Seed Quality of Mungbean Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during late rabi, Kharif I and Kharif II season 2008. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate seed quality of three mungbean varieties namely BARI mung 2, BARI mung 5 and BARI mung 6, that collected from three growing seasons viz. late rabi, kharif I and Kharif II and two harvests viz. 1st and 2nd harvest which were stored in three storage condition such as ambient, cold room and deep freeze. At the start of storage, all seed quality parameters viz. percentage of seed moisture, protein content, germination root shoot length and vigour index were found identical trend among the treatment combinations. After storage (6-12 month), seed quality parameters did not vary markedly among the treatment combinations except seeds of BARI mung 6 that were produced during kharif I season. From this study, it is concluded that late rabi season is suitable for good quality seed production of mungbean varieties and properly dried seed (7.5-8.5% seed moisture) can be stored in any of the storage condition up to one year. This study should be continued for next year.

Objectives:

To find out the seasonal variation and storage condition on seed quality of Mungbean varieties collected from different growing season and harvesting time.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the central Research Farm of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur in three seasons viz. S1-Late rabi, S2- Kharif I and S3 - Kharif II of 2008 and the laboratory part was carried out at Seed Technology Division of BARI. There were three mungbean varieties namely. V₁= BARI mung 2, V₂= BARI mung 5 and V₃ = BARI mung 6 and seeds were collected from 1st harvest (H₁) and 2nd harvest (H₂). The unit plot size was 10 m x 5m. Seeds were sown on 17 February, 18 March and 25 August, 2008 for late rabi, Kharif I and Kharif II, respectively. The crop field was fertilized with NPK at the rate of 30-35-50 kg/ha in the form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of Potash. Appropriate agronomic management practices and proper plant protection measures were taken as and when necessary during the crop growing period. Matured pods were harvested on 22 April (1st harvest) and 8 May (2nd harvest) during late rabi, 20 May (1st harvest) and 29 May (2nd harvest) during kharif I and 20 October (1st harvest) and 10 November during Kharif II season. After harvesting pods were dried threshed and cleaned properly and thereafter initial seed quality parameters were tested under laboratory condition prior to store the seed. Seeds from different sowing, varieties and harvest were stored in three storage condition viz. Ambient, Cold room and Deep freeze. Seed quality parameters were tested at every three months interval. For seed quality determination, seeds were placed on petridish and kept at room temperature. After seven days, data were recorded on germination (%), root and shoot length, seedling dry weight. On the other hand, seed leachate conductivity, seed moisture content and protein content were also recorded. Data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated that late rabi season is suitable for quality seed production of mungbean varieties and first harvested properly dried seed (seed moisture around 7.5-8.5%) can be stored for any of the storage condition up to one year.
