Genetic Upgradation of Gift Strain and Development of Their Mono-sex Seed Production System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The mean final weight of upgraded GIFT and average group GIFT in cistern were 164.94±32.27 and 134.27±38.68g, respectively, while in hapa, the mean final weight of upgraded GIFT and average group GIFT were 153.12±39.96 and 118.16±41.06g, respectively. The sampling weight of upgraded GIFT and average group GIFT in both environments showed significant difference (p>0.05). It was observed that the upgraded GIFT of F4 generation showed 27.30% higher growth over average GIFT strain.

Objectives:

Continuation of genetic up gradation of the GIFT strain through selection program; evaluation of growth performances between upgraded GIFT and average group GIFT strain; and development of mono-sex mass seed production system and dissemination to private entrepreneurs.

Methodology:

A base population (P) of the GIFT fish were formed through a pool breeding among 116 families; of them, 400 individuals (250 & 150) were tagged with AVID numbered tag and reared in breeding pond. After first spawning of the base brood, 1260 individuals of F₁ progeny were collected from breeding pond and sexed (920 and 340). The largest and heaviest individuals of F₁ generation to the descending order at 10% of each sex were selected and stocked in a breeding pond for the production of F₂ generation on the basis of their fast and higher growth. The same procedure was also followed for the production of F₃ and F₄ generations. The fry of F₄ generation was evaluated in comparison to average population of the GIFT in hapa and cistern. Studies were conducted in both cistern (2.0 m3) and pond hapa (2.0 m³) for the period of 5 months. In both the cases there were two treatments with three replicates at a density of 5 fish/m³. The initial mean weight of the upgraded GIFT and average group GIFT strain were 20.25±1.96 and 19.88±1.11g, respectively, in the hapa and 18.75±1.28 and 18.58±1.60g, respectively, in the cistern. The fish were fed twice a day with a mixture of rice bran (80%) and oil cake (20%) at 6-7% body weight. Fortnightly sampling was done to adjust the feed allowances and also to observe the condition of the fish.

Achievement/Findings:

The GIFT strain will be improved future through selection and a national breeding plan for the GIFT fish will be established; mono-sex male seed and GIFT strain will be available for small and large-scale culture; and the GIFT fish will be established as a model for a homestead and commercial enterprise.
