Water Management for Quality Rice Seedling Production in Winter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute experimental farm in Gazipur and Rangpur during Boro (winter) season to determine the appropriate timing of watering to protect seedling from cold as well as produce quality seedling.Water applied for 12 hours day and night appeared to better compared to 10 hour day treatment in respect to seedling height, root length and seedling dry weight. Seedling growth was more affected in BRRI Rangpur stations as the sub station experienced more cold than BRRI head quarter. The treatment which received no water showed some lower value of temperature compared to the other treatments. The water temperature we observed during application was 4 to 6 ⁰C higher than the existing water temperature in the seed bed. Either day or night water treatment (inundation with 3-4 cm of tube well water) for 12 hours might have significant impact on growing healthy seedlings.

Objectives:

To find out yield contribution of water management rice seedlings.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute experimental farm in Gazipur and Rangpur during Boro (winter) season.Sprouted seeds were seeded in puddle soil (seedbed). The seeding time were followed on the basis of temperature record (low); first set seeds are seeded on 24 December, second set seeds are seeded on 31 December and third set seeds are seeded on 7 January when temperatures are very low. The treatments studied in the seedbed were i. T₁ = 12 hour water layered (2-4 cm) at day time ii. T₂ = 8 hour water layered (2-4 cm) at day time iii. T₃ = 12 hour water layered (2-4 cm) at night time and iv. T₄ = without water layer (control). The experiments were laidout in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications in Both BRRI HQ and BRRI RS Rangpur experimental farms. Maximum and minimum water temperature was recorded at 6 hour, 10 hour, 18 hour time in different treatments during the study period. At the end of experiment ten seedlings were randomly uprooted from each seedbed. Seedbed size was 1 m x 1 m.

Seedling growth was more affected in BRRI Rangpur stations as the sub station experienced more cold than BRRI head quarter. The variation of maximum and minimum temperature observed prior to the imposition of water treatment at 6 am, 10 am and 6 pm was quite minimum. However, the treatment which received no water showed some lower value of temperature compared to the other treatments. The water temperature we observed during application was 4 to 6 ⁰C higher than the existing water temperature in the seed bed. we could have an idea that the the warmer water from the tube well has an direct impact to keep the seed bed warmer for a while. This practice works satisfactorily to keep the seedling better compared to that of treatment where no water was applied.
