The study was conducted to estimate the contribution made by BARI vegetable crops to GDP in the national economy of Bangladesh during the financial year 2005-2006 at constant market price of 1999-00. For the purpose of GDP calculation of BARI vegetable crops, both primary and secondary data were collected from the concerned scientists of BARI, BBS and DAM. The total area of vegetable crop was found to be 574.39 thousand hectares and produced 13725.06 thousand metric tons of vegetable. The total export quantity was found to be 6046 metric tons of 54 kinds of different vegetable. Total foreign exchange earning was estimated Tk. 1120.00 million through exporting only 0.00044 percent of total vegetable production. Bangladesh produced total goods and services whose valuation at constant market price of Tk. 3150370.14 million in the financial year 2005-2006 where the contribution of agriculture and forestry was found to be Tk. 467436.18 million (14.84%). The value added price of total vegetable crops was estimated Tk. 72060.16 million in the year 2005-06 while BARI vegetable technologies contributed Tk. 36617.80 million. The contribution of total vegetable was estimated 15.42 percent while BARI vegetable technologies contributed 7.83 percent of agriculture and forestry to the national GDP.

  Seasonality in production

a) To determine the area and production of vegetable crops

b) To quantify the contribution made by vegetable crops to the agriculture and forestry GDP

c) To formulate a policy guideline for scientists, extension personnel, planners and policy makers.

Generally, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) means total valuation of goods and services produced annually in a country. There are two sides for GDP calculation. The income side of the accounts measures the factor incomes that earned by workers in produced goods and services in the economy. On the product side, the flow of goods and services currently produced by workers is measured by expenditures of these goods and services by consumers, business and government (Branson 1979). For estimating the contribution made by vegetable needs to quantify the production and their by product used for value addition. On an average, 3.2 percent was deducted from the total production as post harvest loses for all vegetables. On the other hand, it was only 0.10 percent for potato (BBS, 2006). After then, we collected the farmgate price of each individual vegetable from Directorate of Agricultural Marketing (DAM). Value addition was then calculated through multiplying the production of vegetables by its prices. It is important to note here that no processed vegetable is available in our country except potato and tomato. The value addition obtaibed from potato and tomato by products were not included in the study. Data Sources The study was carried out considering the cropping year 2005-2006. For calculating GDP of vegetable, secondary data were collected from BBS Pocket Book 2006, Krishi Dairy 2008, Bangladesh Economic Review 2006, Hand Book of Agricultural Technology 1999. The year 1999-00 was considered as base year and GDP was calculated at constant market price for the period 2005-2006. Bangladesh produced total goods and services valuation at constant market price of Tk. 3150370.14 million in the financial year 2005-06 where the contribution of agriculture and forestry was found to be Tk. 467436.18 million (Economic review, 2006).

As many as 24 different vegetable crops covered 574.39 thousand hectare of land and produced 13725.06 thousand metric tons. Bangladesh has only 8300 thousand hectare of arable land. In percentage, vegetable crops covered only 6.92 percent of total arable land. Potato ranked first in terms of acreage followed by brinjal, radish, tomato,  country bean, cabbage, cauliflower etc. Total export was 6.046, consumption at home was 13720.06, total production was 13725.06 thousand metric tons respectively in the year 2005-06. In total, only 0.0004 percent vegetables of total production were exported to Middle East and Western countries namely London, Uk, Rom and Italy. But, major quantity of vegetables were exported to Middle East. The value addition from export of 54 different kinds of vegetables was estimated in constant term Tk. 848 million in the year 2005-06. On the other hand, it was Tk. 71212 million from consumption at home. Total export earning from total vegetable production was found to be 0.0118 percent. The foreign exchange earning share was found highest from potato followed by brinjal, pointedgourd, okra, latiraj etc. Total GDP in constant (1999-00) price was found to be Tk. 3150370.14 million in the year 2005-06. Agriculture and forestry in constant price was found to be Tk. 467436.18 million while vegetable crops contributed Tk. 72060.16 million in 2005-06. On the other hand, BARI vegetable technologies contributed Tk. 36617.80 million. In terms of percentage, the total vegetable contribution was found to be 15.42 percent hile BARI vegetable technologies contributed 7.83 percent of agriculture and forestry to the national GDP.
