Technical Efficiency of Brinjal Growers in Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in two brinjal growing districts namely; Rangpur and Chittagong of Bangladesh during the period of 2007-08 to estimates the technical efficiency of brinjal growers. The study suggested that brinjal production was profitable and the average benefit cost ratio (BCR) was found to be 3.92. The estimated results showed that the average level of technical efficiency among the sample farmers was 90. This implies that given the existing technology and level of inputs, the output could be increased by 10 percent. In inefficiency model, the coefficient of farmers education have found positively significant effect on brinjal production. Eighty two percent farmers produced outputs to the maximum frontier output level (86-98%). Farmers in the study area also mentioned some problems like high price of fertilizer, insecticides, severe attack of insects etc to its production.

Objectives:

Methodology:

In this study one intensive brinjal growing area of Rangpur district and another semi intensive area Chittagong district were selected. Two upazilas from each district and two or three villages from each upazila were purposively selected based on the intensive brinjal growers. In selecting the area, necessary help was taken from the concerned scientists of BARI and DAE personnel of respective district. A total of 30 x 2 x 2 =120 samples were finally selected. Data were collected by survey method with the help of pre-designed pre-tested interview schedule from January to March, 2008. Data were taken on input-output costs, price, yields and other necessary information. The collected data were edited, summarized and analyzed by using both tabular and statistical method. Technical efficiency was used to achieve maximum possible output with available resources. The stochastic Cobb-Douglas production frontier model was used for estimating technical efficiency of brinjal producer.

Achievement/Findings:

The average cost of production on full cost basis was found to be Tk 88400/ha. Average yield of brinjal obtained by the sample farmers was 18557 kg/ha, which was about 2.5 times higher than the national average 7200 kg/ha (BBS, 2006). More or less similar yield was found by Hossain and et. al. Higher yield (19657 kg/ha) was found in Chittagong compared to Rangpur 17335 kg/ha (Table 6). The average gross return from brinjal production was found Tk 219727/ha. The average gross margin on full cost basis was found Tk 131327/ha and cash cost basis was Tk 163093/ha. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was calculated as 3.88 on cash cost basis and 2.49 on full cost basis. It implying that one taka investment in brinjal production would generate Tk.3.88 and Tk. 2.49 respectively. Cost of production per kg brinjal cultivation was Tk 3.05 on cash cost basis and Tk 4.76 on full cost basis. The return from one kg brinjal production was Tk 11.84 which was similar in both Rangpur and Chittagong. The estimated technical efficiency for brinjal varies from 66-98%, with an average efficiency 90%. This means that on an average this appears to be 10% technical inefficiency. The co-efficients of human labour, TSP, insecticides and land type were found positive and significant and land preparation cost, MP and irrigation cost were negative but significant. The coefficients of farmer’s education have significantly positive effect on inefficiency for brinjal. High requirement of fertilizer and insecticides, severe attack of insects (83%), less effectiveness of insecticides (57%), non-availability of fertilizer (45%), incidence of diseases (25%) and lack of quality seedling (22%) were the major problems of brinjal cultivation.
