Effect of Trichocompost Against Seedling Disesae of Wheat and Barley

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Trichoderma harzianum based Tricho-compost was prepared in the cow dung and was evaluated against soil-borne pathogen, Sclerotium rolfsii of wheat and barley. The Tricho-compost was added to Sclerotium rolfsii infested soil @ 3 t/ha. The Trichoderma harzianum based Tricho-compost showed significant effect on soil-borne pathogen and increased yield of both wheat and barley.

Objectives:

To observe the efficiency on multiplication of Trichoderma in compost media against S. rolfsii.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in the field, Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Bio-agent Trichoderma harzianum was multiplied in the mixture of Khesari and Wheat bran substrates. The formulated Trichoderma was used to mass multiplication in the cow dung based compost. The formulated Trichoderma was used in between two layer of cow dung at 100g/m². Soil was inoculated with barley grain colonized with Sclerotium rolfsii at 100g/m² soil and allowed 15 days for establishing the pathogen into the soil. The Sclerotium rolfsii inoculated soil was treated with formulated Trichoderma @ 3 t/ha and were kept for 7 days for proper colonization. Wheat and barley seeds were sown in line sowing. In case of chemical treatment, seeds were treated with vitavax200 and in control treatment only recommended doses of cow dung was used. Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was followed with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 3m. Data were collected on percentage seedling mortality and yield. Data were analyzed statistically by employing Duncun’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

Seedling mortality of wheat and barley differed significantly (p=0.05) among the treatments. In wheat, the highest seedling mortality (29.72%) was recorded in control plot and lower seedling mortality was in Tricho-compost (3.33%) and seed treatment with vitavax 200 (8.06%) plots. The yield of wheat was higher in Tricho-compost treated plot and lower in control plot. Same trend was also observed in barley crop. In control plot the seedling mortality was 37.78 % where as it was only 10.55% in Tricho-compost treated plot. The yield of barley was also increased in Tricho-compost treated plot compared to control.
