Shoot Reserve Translocation and Yield of Hybrid Varieties at Varying Transplanting Dates in Aus Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted to investigate the shoot reserve translocation, post heading crop growth rate and yield performance of hybrid rice varieties grown over different transplanting dates in Aus season. Post heading CGR was significantly influenced by the variety and transplanting date.The variety and transplanting date significantly influenced the shoot reserves translocation to the grain. Hybrids were more sensitive to delayed transplanting in term of shoot reserve translocation to grain compared to inbred BRRI dhan48. The highest grain tilling percentage was registered in variety inbred BRRI dhan48 (75.95) compared to all hybrids in 10 April transplanting whereas the lowest spikelets tilling percentage (13.11) was recorded from Hera2 coupled with the transplanting dated 15 May. The grain filling percentage were reduced 78.63, 58.52, 64.62 and 24.88% in Hera2, Aloron, Tia and inbred BRRI dhan48, respectively at delayed transplanting (15 May). The spikelets filling percentage reduced progressively due to delayed transplanting. Recommended modern inbred varieties are better for cultivation in Aus season.

Objectives:

To investigate the shoot reserve translocation, post heading crop growth rate and yield performance of hybrid rice varieties grown over different transplanting dates in Aus season.

Methodology:

Three hybrid variety namely Hera2, Aloron, Tia and one inbred(BRRI dhan48 ) and 4(four) transplanting date viz.01 April, 16 April, 30 April and 15 May were considered for this experiment. The experiment was arranged split-plot design with three replications during Aus 2009. Transplanting date and variety were distributed to main plots and sub plots respectively. The sub-plot size was 4 X 5-m (20 m²). 30 day-old-seedlings were transplanted maintaining 25 x 15-cm spacing and one healthy seedling was used per hill (for both hybrid and inbred varieties). Observations were made on shoot (culm + leaf sheath +leaf blade) and panicle dry matter accumulation at flowering and at harvesting stages, yield and yield components etc. The collected data were statistically analyzed by MSTAT C. Mean was separated by LSD test.

Achievement/Findings:

Post heading CGR was significantly influenced by the variety and transplanting date. However the post heading CGR reduced around 76% in hybrids and 58% in inbred BRRI dhan48 at delayed transplanting (15 May).The maximum reduction of shoot reserve translocation occurred in Hera2 (160.22%) followed by Aloron (136.78%), Tia (65.29%) due to delayed in transplanting (15 May) compared to 01 April transplanted crop while the value was the lowest inbred BRRI dhan48 (16.26%). The result indicates that all studied hybrids were more sensitive to delayed transplanting in term of shoot reserve translocation to grain compared to inbred BRRI dhan48. the highest grain tilling percentage was registered in variety inbred BRRI dhan48 (75.95) compared to all hybrids in 10 April transplanting whereas the lowest spikelets tilling percentage (13.11) was recorded from Hera2 coupled with the transplanting dated 15 May. The grain filling percentage were reduced 78.63, 58.52, 64.62 and 24.88% in Hera2, Aloron, Tia and inbred BRRI dhan48, respectively at delayed transplanting (15 May). The spikelets filling percentage reduced progressively due to delayed transplanting. Grain yield of Hera2 was affected severely in delayed transplanting.
